I'm getting "unk" back for any coordinates in the ocean around Seattle (see image below).

Example request:
http://ws.geonames.net/oceanJSON?lat=48.319118&lng=-122.904548&username=[USER]&radius=2&lang=en-GB&token=[TOKEN]

{
"ocean": {
"distance": "0",
"geonameId": 0,
"name": "Unk"
}
}

This is not a problem across the border in Canada.

I have two questions:
1) Please can this be added?
2) Is it possible for me to contribute to the waterbodies data? We are using this API extensively to determine which oceans a sailing voyage took place in and do get gaps in the data quite often (I will start logging them all).

Thank you!

Hi Chris

Sure.

1) how shall we name the attached ocean shape? At the moment it has the
name 'Unk'.

2) let's start with some sample gaps and then we can start analyzing
what is missing.

Best Regards

Marc

Hi Chris

Thanks a lot.

We have updated the boundaries for the following features:

https://www.geonames.org/6957035/salish-sea.html
https://www.geonames.org/5807517/puget-sound.html
https://www.geonames.org/5798976/strait-of-juan-de-fuca.html
https://www.geonames.org/5795379/strait-of-georgia.html

There are no other ocean features with the name of Unk.

Best Regards

Marc

Hi Marc,

Please could you provide an update on the Hudson River being a water body on Geonames?

I am also struggling to find a waterbody for the rivers around Montreal and Quebec (see photo, there seems to be nothing west of the selected waterbody):
Screenshot 2025-08-01 at 08.55.36.png

I spotted a discussion you had in 2005 about limitations of returning rivers: https://forum.geonames.org/gforum/posts/list/2704.page

Is there something we can do to improve the rivers in the system?

Is it possible for water bodies such as rivers and lakes to be returned in the Ocean API? Or could there be a water body API that would achieve that? This would be a massive help for us.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Marc,

We have received a request for the Hudson River to be marked as a water body on geonames.

Would this be possible?

Also, is it possible for water bodies such as rivers and lakes to be returned in the Ocean API? Or could there be a water body API that would achieve that?

Thanks,

Hi Marc,

St Lawrence River keeps coming up with our users. One of them sent this reference to it: https://www.planstlaurent.qc.ca/en/st-lawrence-river

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris

The challenge is in finding the dataset. There is a project
'hydrosheds', it is based on feature extraction from satellite data:
https://www.hydrosheds.org/products/hydrorivers

It looks promising. However, it does not have many names, for rivers
none. Would you be ready to help contributing the names for the relevant
boundary polygons?
For rivers it is difficult to automatically match the geonames features
with the boundary polygons. For lakes it is much easier and we have
started with the work.

Best Regards

Marc

Hi Chris

What would be the name of this water body?
