I was thinking last night that there would be a lot of iPads sold in the
non-celluar-radio version. Meaning a lot of wifi devices out there that
are going to be very interested in where to get wifi.

While its a reverse use of geomena, I think a new query to give near-by
APs would be useful. POST to geomena.org/locate/ with lat=, long=,
radius= and get a list of APs in return. Meaning the db would need to
hold the "open" flag for each AP.

Since the iPad has a GPS on it, I can picture an app with a compass and
an arrow(s) pointing which way to walk and how far to find some sweet
sweet internet access.

Interesting observation. I've already got the open/wep/wpa info in my
copy of the DB so if you add that to the couch db I can run the import
script again. Of course now this is just begging for
foursquare/gowalla/whatever integration where venues could be flagged
with free wifi, and the app could tie in to the other services and
show things like "free wifi 2 blocks east at Heart Coffee, 3 bloocks
north at Tony's Pizzeria", etc.

I'm hearing the cheapest iPad (WiFi only) won't have GPS. Bummer!
