GPX from GC webpage ... fail

Not sure anyone has found this as well, but figured I would throw it
out there.

I generally have a database in my phone based on my GSAK database
which is updated by weekly pocket queries. If I get notification of a
new cache and want to import it into my phone I seem to get an error.
I open the cache page and select to download a GPX file (which then
shows up on my phone), but when I try to sync, I get an error and the
new cache does not import. I am pretty sure I have tried both the 1.0
and 1.1 GPX versions and both failed.

I do not remember the full details of the failure as it has been
awhile since I have tried it, but I may try again tonight to verify.

To date I have resorted to adding my location and then changing the
coordinates to the new cache, which means I do not have any of the new
cache details quickly available. Sure would be nice if this worked.

Like I said, I usually use GPX files generated by GSAK, so I do not
know if this is a problem for all GPX files coming directly from
geocaching.com or not.

Any help/info would be great.

Thanks,
Jason

Hi Jason
I recall GSAK generates a bit different GPX compared to gc.com which has been the gold standard for reasons of popularity.
If you can isolate the GPX for one geocache that fails to import and post it to this list or email me, maybe I can spot the problem.

For completeness, here is what I have learned to answer my question:

I can get the geocaching.com gpx file from a cache page to work
fine ... if I download it to my computer and then move it to the
phone.

The problem appears to be with the android browser as discussed here:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1780

It is a bug in the OS that screws up the download directly to the
phone ... it is not only a GPX file problem, but geocachers are
certainly the most vocal about the issue. Does not look like there is
anything that geocaching.com is messing up or that Geohunter is
messing up.

Very annoying that 27 months after first reported it is not fixed.

Not sure what I am going to do to make this process easier, so may
just have to continue what I have been doing.

I have a Motorola Droid that uses the Android software and NEVER have had a problem with the Motorola Droid.  In fact, I even spent the $10.00 for the Android Geocaching app, and it works very well.

I am not exactly sure of the point of your post. I am sure the
official GCing app works fine with the website ... never said it did
not.

What I said was, if you try to download a GPX file on your Droid (I
have the same phone BTW) from a single cache page on geocaching.com by
clicking the GPX button ... the file you get to your phone IS NOT the
same as the file you would get if you did the same thing from a PC.
Although they have the same name ... open them both in a text editor
and you will see what I mean.

The PC gets a real GPX file that can be opened by Geohunter as
designed.
The Droid (and based on the link I provided, any phone running
android) gets what looks like the html file of the web page, which is
not what I or Geohunter expected.

I have had no problems with my phone either (besides it being slow) or
with the Geohunter software ... until I tried this different method to
quickly import a single cache into geohunter from the droid browser.
And based on the link, this is not a problem with geocaching.com
exclusively or is it a problem with geohunter. It is a problem with
the android web browser using a <form> submission to try to download a
file.

Happy caching!!!
