Assessing the risks of water deficit in Central Africa
Host institution

The National Institute of Cartography (NIC) (Cameroon)

Grant year

2023

Project summary

Over recent decades, water availability has become an increasing challenge for west Africa, threatening domestic hygiene, agriculture, food security, and hydropower, and putting the lives of millions of people at risk. Dr Thierry C. Fotso-Nguemo, based at the National Institute of Cartography (NIC) in Yaoundé, Cameroon, will lead a team to evaluate how SRM might alter the effects of climate change on the hydro-climatology of major Central African river basins, including how that might affect irrigation and the filling of dams. Their insights will be essential in helping decision makers better plan, manage and govern water resources in the sub-region, as well as raising awareness of the risks and benefits associated with SRM.

The impacts of SRM on seasonal and intra-seasonal climate variability over East Africa

Host institution

Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) (Uganda)

Grant year

2023

Project summary

Millions of people across East Africa rely on rain-fed agriculture for their survival, and are under increasing stress due to the effects of climate change. The deployment of SRM would offset an increase in global temperatures, and potentially reduce the risks of global warming, but its impact on East Africa’s seasonal and intra-seasonal climate is unclear. A team led by Dr Bob Alex Ogwang, from Uganda’s National Meteorological Authority, will explore how SRM might affect seasonal and intra-seasonal rainfall and temperatures, compared to the changes brought about by a shifting climate. Their results will bolster the region’s scientific contribution to global SRM policy discussions, whilst also encouraging further regional interdisciplinary scientific research in general.

The impact of climate change and SRM on malaria in South Asia

Host institution

COMSATS University Islamabad (Pakistan)

Grant year

2023

Project summary

Vector-born diseases, such as malaria, can be particularly sensitive to a changing climate, creating new risks for millions of people in malaria endemic countries. Prof. Athar Hussein will lead the first team exploring how the use of SRM could affect the impacts of climate change on malaria in South Asia, including Iran, Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan. The project is an extension of Prof. Hussein’s efforts to establish a professional cadre of local experts on climate change and diseases in Pakistan, and will foster engagement with a diverse set of national stakeholders. The resulting climate-health nexus information will be shared with policy makers, to help increase understanding about the risks and potential benefits of SRM.
