to geoengineering
Folks,

Increasingly, I will be asking you to post to climatein...@googlegroups.com, in lieu of geoengi...@googlegroups.com.

There are three statuses (stati?) that people can have with respect to the geoengineering googlegroup: (1) post without moderation, (2) post with moderation, and (3) spam sender. People will initially retain their current statuses. I do not have time to read every post. If someone is being abusive, please email me at kcal...@carnegie.stanford.edu (not the entire group) and I will look at their posts more carefully.

You can also go to individual posts on the web (e.g. http://groups.google.com/group/geoengineering/browse_thread/thread/9d35704b324742cc/9bfd31aa09381d54?lnk=gst&q=caldeira#9bfd31aa09381d54) and rate posts (see stars on bottom). I will review this from time to time. People who consistently get low rating will be put on moderation.

The "Climate Intervention" group (http://groups.google.com/group/climateintervention) is designed to meet the needs of citizens, both professionals and the interested public, who would like to discuss intentional intervention in the climate system. Discussions should touch on intentional modification of climate but may range more broadly. General news stories mentioning geoengineering or other climate science news should be sent to climatein...@googlegroups.com. Highly speculative discussions (consistent with the known laws of physics) should take place there.

The "Geoengineering" group (http://groups.google.com/group/geoengineering) is designed to meet the needs of working professionals in academia, research laboratories, and the policy world. It is designed to transmit information and act as a forum to discuss research results, new ideas, and so on, at the level of an intelligent graduate student in a related discipline. This group focuses on direct intervention in Earth's energy balance (longwave and shortwave radiation, ocean heat storage, etc), but includes ways to remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Particularly good or important news stories focusing on geoengineering can be posted here, but we cannot read every journalistic account.

Please self-moderate so I do not have to moderate for you. If I reject a significant fraction of your emails, I will designate you a spam sender for geoengi...@googlegroups.com so I do not need to moderate you any more. I do not have the time to make up for your lack of ability to moderate yourself. Think of being on moderation as being on probation. Think of rejected moderated emails as failing probation.

Please do not post to both groups. I encourage people who want a broad and complete discussion to sign up for both groups.

Happy New Year !!

Thanks,

Ken

GUIDELINES FOR POSTING TO THE GEOENGINEERING GOOGLEGROUP

1. ALL POSTS MUST ADDRESS INTENTIONAL INTERVENTION IN THE CLIMATE SYSTEM. General posts on climate, the carbon cycle, carbon capture and storage, human nature, etc, should be submitted to <climatein...@googlegroups.com>.

2. ALL POSTS MUST ADD NEW INFORMATION, RAISE A NEW ISSUE, ASK AN INFORMED QUESTION, OR PRESENT AN INFORMED OPINION. [ You can always send you comment or question to <climatein...@googlegroups.com>. ]

3. NO POST MAY MAKE AN AD HOMINEM ATTACK OR SPECULATE ABOUT SOMEBODY ELSE'S MOTIVATION.

4. PLEASE SIGN YOUR POST WITH YOUR REAL NAME AND PREFERABLY ADDITIONAL CONTACT INFORMATION.

5. PLEASE RESPOND WITH ON-TOPIC POINTS WITHIN A SINGLE DISCUSSION (i.e., same subject line). TO DISCUSS AN UNRELATED TOPIC, PLEASE START A NEW DISCUSSION WITH A FRESH EMAIL WITH A NEW SUBJECT LINE.

6. PLEASE LIMIT THE NUMBER OF POSTS THAT YOU MAKE THAT DO NOT PROVIDE USEFUL INFORMATION. Multiple emails in a single day that do not contain new information will be regarded as an abuse of the posting privilege. New members will be held to a higher standard than long-term members. In general, newer members will have the privilege of making at most a few posts per week.

THIS WILL BE A MODERATED EMAIL GROUP. Moderation will enforce these guidelines and eliminate other abuses (advertising, foul language, etc).  Moderation decisions may be arbitrary but are nevertheless not subject to appeal.
