Hi all,

Today, March 28, 2023, marks the first anniversary of the death of T.C. Howard -- an American architect, nuclear engineer, and designer (& often hands-on builder) of many beautiful and practical geodesic domes, both in the USA and around the world.

In this discussion group, we've sometimes marked the passing of notable contributors to geodesic design, architectural thinking and construction, and knowledge sharing on these topics. So, a tribute to T.C. Howard,  is long overdue. Better late than never!

Howard, who was born in 1931, designed, among other structures, the famous ASM International open-grid dome near Cleveland, Ohio; the Poliedro dome stadium in Caracas, Venezuela (469' in diameter!); the Union Tank Car dome in Baton Rouge, Louisana (dismantled some years ago); the Climatron botanical dome in St. Louis, Missouri; and a superb botanical dome in Mexico, the Oaxtepec Greenhouse (one of my favourites, pic attached).

These are just a few of T.C. Howard's many accomplishments over a career that spanned more than half a century, most of it as the owner of, and the brains behind, Synergetics, Inc., based in Raleigh, North Carolina. For many dome projects, he partnered with Bucky Fuller, architect James Fitzgibbon, and artist/mathematician Duncan Stuart. He knew these three men from his days as a student in the 1950s at the University of North Carolina's School of Design.

As some of you may recall, Katrina Howard Fairley, T.C.'s daughter, contributed to our discussion group several years ago. She maintains an interesting Facebook page where most of her father's achievements are recorded, including many photos. Check it out:

A gem of old on-camera interview (2001?) with T.C. Howard and Duncan Stuart (known especially for his efficient triacon method of geodesic subdivision) can be found here:

Best wishes to Katrina and the extended Howard family. Your father was a true giant of dome architecture and engineering.
