Hi everyone,
just tumbled into this ruby extension:
Install it into the last free edition of sketchup make 2017 then you can open even v25 (tested).
Watch the youtube tutorial provided at the Warehouse page.
This extension put a new "Open newer version..." command into the file menu.

Unfortunately, this will convert to plentyful poligons, so you will need GPU power to handle.

Thanks, Levente,

I'll have to give it a try.  (Believe it or not, I still use SketchUp 6! It's fast, small, and does JUST about everything I need.)

David,

You must be running an older operating system (Windows 7?) on a computer not connected to the internet. I remember constantly refusing system upgrade from Microsoft till they just highjacked my computer in the middle of the night and installed the latest operating system. Many of my older legacy software no longer worked, such as PhotoShop and AutoCAD. Now users cannot own any software. It's all subscription based. Those clever marketing guys have really outdone themselves. I'm even being told now that I will need to buy a new laptop because Microsoft will no longer support Windows 10 and my current ThinkPad that isn't compatible with the newer Windows 11.

You can download a Windows 11 iso file. Then look for the "rufus" app, that can prepare an 8GB usb stick to install windows from it.
The Rufus has tick-boxes to avoid "diligent" hardware check.
here is a tutorial how to do it:
