I searched through my dome photo library, and added each dome to the map.

(The number of domes surprised me. I didn't know I had that many different dome photos.)

Some of the domes came from Temcor documentation -- lists of dome locations. (For example, the domes in the Netherlands came from a Dutch Temcor brochure.)

I have exhausted my documentation resources. Anyone else know of a geodesic dome that is distinguishable on Google Maps? (I found a few were too small to make out that they are geodesic domes -- leaving them out of the map list.)
____________________

Paul, do you know how people are finding the map?

Within Google Maps, a search for "domes" or "geodesic" doesn't show our map (or any other customized map, for that matter.) Even an advanced Google search, limited to "http://maps.google.com" still doesn't list our map.

I have to assume that the "views" you noted must be group members (or visitors) who are going to the map.

BFI featured it in their newsletter, that might account for the spike.

Perhaps, that's generating some of the visits, as well.

Hi Taff and Paul,
Here are the coordinates of a large dome home on the Thousand Islands
Parkway, southwest of Brockville, Ontario (around the junction of Lake
Ontario and the St. Lawrence River).

44 deg 16' 4.82" N
75 deg 52' 12.84" W

It's a low-profile 3v icosa with lots of extensions. I'll dig out a
photo and send it separately.

And here are the coordinates of what I believe is a large water tank
capped by a shallow geodesic dome made of aluminum, near Masson-Angers
in the province of Quebec. I don't have a pic of that one.

45 deg 33' 32.61" N
75 deg 25' 03.79" W

Cheers,

Domes of the World is a bit confusing. The List started by saying
geodesic domes. Please do not include The Life and Science Museum
dome in Durham. It is NOT geodesic. It is a Charter-Sphere Dome
(lesser circle geometry). I have a hard enough time explaining to
people that it is not geodesic, this list under geodesic help will
just confuse the issue. Several other domes on this list are not
geodesic either. Perhaps starring the ones that are geodesic would
help clarify to the world the difference. Thank You! Great job!

"Geodesic" (or "geodetic") means, "earth dividing"

A geodesic line is the shortest line, on a sphere (geo-) that connects TWO points.

While it's true that an arc of SEVERAL line segments do not follow a great-circle arc, in a Charter-Sphere dome, ...

...the same is true of almost all "geodesic dome" chords. They do not fall PRECISELY on a great-circle arc.  I can't point to any "geodesic dome" architecture, as built, that strictly follows great-circle arcs.

I agree that, for what is generally described as a "geodesic" dome, chords approximate great-circle arcs, and that for a "Charter-Sphere" dome, the chords follow "lesser circle" arcs.

I suspect that, in common parlance, the public will never distinguish between the two, and that any attempts to "correct" the issue is a lost cause.
____________________

I've previously stayed out of discussions that pursue the distinction, and this post is the limit of my contribution on the subject. I'm content to let folks have their own opinions. I'm not interested in any campaign to "convince" people of the distinction, precisely because NO constructed dome, of which I am aware, strictly follows great-circle geometry. (Some of Bucky's early experiments did so, but I can't think of any subsequent architecture that stands in evidence, today.)

The 2v domes built by Sipsmart, using basic triacon subdivision, are
probably an exception to what you're saying, Taff. With that
particular geometry, you can start at any vertex you want on the
triangulated sphere and trace a great circle through other vertices
until you arrive back at the same point. But that design is not
commonly used in dome construction. For triangulated domes, I agree
that trying to distinguish between geodesic and non-geodesic is
probably a lost cause.

All of TC Howard's geodesic Domes are pure geodesic. His Charter-
Sphere Domes are not and have never been classified as geodesic. He
set up a separate company, Charter Industries just for this purpose.
Sad that the geodesic help group does not know the difference. If you
see a smaller circle within the geometry, then it is not a geodesic
dome, which Bucky patented! Again Geodesic domes must be ALL greater
circle geometry. Does not mean the other domes are any less
beautiful, just not geodesic. Personally, I think lesser geometry
domes are more appealing to the eye.

Here's another:

45.58079; -75.86773

This dome home is in Chelsea, Québec, Canada, north of Ottawa, near the western bank of the Gatineau River. It appears to be based on the rhombic enneacontahedron, which has two types of diamond-shaped faces. Not sure whether it qualifies for the Domes of the World Map.

From Wikipedia: "The rhombic enneacontahedron is a zonohedron with a superficial resemblance to the rhombic triacontahedron."

Hi Paul,
Here's one of the earlier messages, with coordinates. The dome diameters are 50 ft and 20 ft. They are both 4v icosa, class I, 7/12 truncation.

Thanks for all your work on this map. I think it's a great complement to the discussions.

We used to have the canteen there.. it was quite hot during the summer. All around there are the student's rooms.

Best regards,

I could not see the dome from the sky. Sorry. Do you just want me to place a marker for it over the building this dome is within?

Taff and I have edit rights to the map. You can give either of us the x-/y-coordinates and the name you want the point to have, and it will be done. Paul sends...
