I stumbled across this photo, online, a few days ago, and thought the composition looked familiar:

Comparing it to my photo library, I found that it recalls the geometry of the Eden Project domes, EXCEPT that the large hexagons are on the inside, and the triangles are on the outside. Here, you can see the triangle/hexagon support struts "behind" the outer bubble skin:

Here's how I modeled a representation of the geometry. (Note that I arbitrarily chose 8v, even though 8v is not used at Eden. Several frequencies are used there.) Start with a basic geodesic rendition:

Remove, or hide, chords to produce a triangle/hexagon pattern:

Add struts, to produce a tetrahedron on each triangle "base":

Use the apex of each tetrahedron, as a vertex, to produce pentagonal/hexagonal faces. (Generally, they won't be planar faces.) I've also made each "face" a "bubble":

Truncate to make it a dome:

That's all there is to it!

By the way, the first photo is of the geodesic dome frame at Fern Glen Inn. I haven't found any other information, regarding the dome. I found the photo on this webpage:

Did some more digging. While the photo is posted at the Fern Glen Inn blog, and the initial implication is that that's the location of the dome, I couldn't find it on aerial maps (Google or bing.)

Re-reading, "Midlothian Road" is mentioned. Searching on bing, I found the lake and grainy imagery of the location. It's near Fern Glen Inn, at about 1000 Midlothian Road, longitude: 45.590911, latitude: -79.506029

On bing, you will recognize the location by an obvious pyramid. It's the private property of the artist, Peter Camani, who encourages visitors. He's known for his "Screaming Heads" artwork, on the property.

Property is also associated with the local "Harvest Festival." http://harvestfestival.org/

I'm inclined to believe that the dome may have been built by "Rose Custom Construction Services," http://www.roseccs.com/

The dome_layer program, which illustrates this kind of structure,
has the vertices on two spheres, but there is an option to change
the radius of the second layer to allow it to be on the inside or
outside of the first layer.

Check out Crash on the roseccs site Taff linked. Triangulated structures are not limited to domes...

Thanks, Adrian,

I (for one) appreciate the provisions included in your script. I expect that my simplified, step-wise "tutorial," plus your program/scripts, will all potential questions. (We'll see.)

Looking at photos, I'm curious about possible tetrahedron rotation, or "turbining," as it's been called. The construction, obviously, reinforces the hexagons/pentagons in the "dual" outer layer. I wonder whether it's enough to control ALL deformations.  Not quite sure how to, personally, test/exercise this.

Ken, I was wondering how long it would be before someone commented on other RoseCCS projects. The crashed spaceship project gave me a chuckle. The photo above is of their "Prism 6" structure. (Not sure if it's a dome or an actual prism structure, such as a truncated pyramid.)

I started questioned turbining, due to this photo.

For those interested, I've posted the 3D SketchUp model to the Google/Trimble 3D Warehouse:

Back to the Eden Project, I used this diagram, from an online source,...

I haven't yet worked out the undulating ground truncation (and may never pursue it that far, btw.)
