While looking for spatial extensions to H2, I found another extension
here: http://geosysin.iict.ch/irstv-trac/wiki/H2spatial/Download

Is this project coordinating with that project or are they completely
separate?

I found a link to their project on the GeoServer web site. I found a
link to this project via the hibernate-spatial project which we also
use.

Hi John,

A while back we had some correspondence on the H2 list. The general take away was that it would be great to collaborate but nothing came of it. But at this point no there is no formal coordination.

Slightly off-topic, but useful I guess. There is a Hibernate Spatial
dialect for GeoDB available. The current development version works
with version 0.6 of GeoDB.

Cheers,

I saw that. We are going to try it. Has anyone uses this in a production environment yet?

Our general stance is that H2 is not a production database. We always recommend postgresql/postgis. That said I know many people on the H2 swear they use H2 in production with no issue. However I myself have run into cases where the database becomes corrupted and loss of data occurs. I can't be sure of why but I suspect it is due to extensive use of BLOB data... which I have heard reports of H2 not always handling gracefully. But that is nothing concrete.

Thanks Justin.  We are going to try it out and see if our unit and integration tests pass and how the performance compares with Oracle, MySql and SqlServer.

We use the GeoDB for automated integration tests and use PostGIS in
production.

I guess you can use GeoDB in production as a read only database (like
the EPSG database in GeoTools). We have, as Justin has also pointed
out, experienced some strange errors in connection pooling and closing
of the database which made me doubt its production quality.

Cheers,

Jan
