Dashpoint Name: Really? These still exist in 2019?
GD74-CADE and GD20-BYWI both took me close to historic Wilmington, Illinois where my parents met in High School, and this is the third point to do so. Situated along the aptly named River Road, which skirts a parallel path to the Kankakee River. As I traversed the nearest edge just outside the circle, headed southbound, I knew I needed to circle back and approach again northbound to hit the scoring edge from the main road (my recon had been quite a while ago). As I slowed about the 117 meter mark, I glanced to the driveway of the home that was in the direct path and what did I see? A lawn jockey. And while, yes, I've read the apocryphal tales of Jocko Graves and how these statues honor his devotion, but I seriously doubt that anyone in Wilmington, Illinois, knows the story of Jocko Graves. The town does, unfortunately, have somewhat of a reputation of racial intolerance, as does (unfortunately) my own home town. But I had thought that history was long since gone. But like the embers of a forest fire these seeds of bigotry can smolder through seemingly innocuous paraphernalia - leading me back to the discovery of a lawn jockey in South Wilmington in 2019.
Luckily the dashpoint was not on THAT property. All I had to do to score was take the next entrance to an apartment complex that drove in by the river and I easily reached the scoring zone, but I quickly turned around after hitting only 92 meters. Looking on the map, I probably could have gotten as close as 30 meters, but I saw no point - I wanted to be well out of there.
