While I had known for a while that YPYR Geodash was definitely the closest Dashpoint (6.4km from home), I hadn't 'gone for it', as it is in an area that has been burnt out in a New South Wales series of bush fires during November - where I had been affected, and had to be evacuated twice from my village of Tinonee.
This fire started west of me, at Hillville, and the westerly wind blew it south of Tinonee, through the Kiwarric Forest, over Breakneck Lookout, and then the wind changed, to from the south, blowing what was now a 12km front, northward to block off the main road to Tinonee (The Bucketts Way), and hundreds of properties. While only TWO houses were burnt in the village, there MUCH property damage to those living south of The Bucketts Way, as they back directly into the bush and Forest. The fire was raised to *Catastrophic Risk* with winds that were expected to be greater than 100km/hr, with a forecast 40°C. Fortunately those did not occur, but the wind did come at 50km/hr, and the temperature 36! So with massive amounts of manpower, on the ground, and in the air, MANY properties were saved, though just west of this Dashpoint several houses were burnt, in Fords Road, on the western side of the Highway. Embers were falling kilometers ahead of the raging fire, and it easily broached the Pacific Highway from Breakneck, and Fords Road, entering the Koorainghat National Park on a four kilometre wide front. Many of my colleagues were unable to get home (Forster) for several days, and had to stay in Taree as a result; and other Nurses were unable to get to the Hospital for their shifts as well!
So anyway, with a couple of days off I braved going into this burnt-out area of Jack Wardens Road, parked near the water reservoir about 500m south of the Dashpoint, and walked down a cycle track through the devastation. The closest I got to the 'Koorainghat' Dashpoint was 53 metres, and while it was possible to walk closer through the burnt brush, I decided to leave the scorched area alone, so that it has a better chance to regenerate.
BTW on Christmas Eve the area had only received 10mm of rain in the previous SIX weeks since the fires; but on Christmas Day MANY prayers were answered when 23mm fell at Tinonee (almost an inch!)
So, that's THREE points to the Laid Back Dashers, and a belated Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year, to all the Dashers (and Prancers !!!)

I've been reading about the devastating bush fires in Australia (and the record heat). Scary and tragic for loss of life and property. Stay safe.
