To replace the kernel of androVM_vbox86tp_4.1.1_r6.1-20130222-gapps-houdini-flash.ova, I think that vmdk files are modified.

so, I extract the ova file using 7zip tool and got the 3 vmdk file.

And then, using VMware DiskMount Utility tool, I try to edit the vmdk files.

But, the tool cannot mount vmdk file with below error messages.

C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware DiskMount Utility>vmware-mount J: "D:\My Work\And
roVM\androVM_vbox86t_4.1.1_r6.1-20130222-gapps-houdini-flash-disk1.vmdk"
Unable to mount the virtual disk.  The disk may be in use by a virtual
machine or mounted under another drive letter.  If not, verify that the
disk is a virtual disk file, and that the disk file has not been corrupted.

I have a VM setup to boot from a Linux live iso (gparted) and attach the drive image to that when I want to play with the contents. But then I use a Mac and it has a habit of littering filesystems with extra "junk" files so I avoid using VMDKMounter. I see you're using Windows, do you have an ext4 driver installed?

No I don't have.

I just wonder how the vmdk file are organized.

When I open the vmdk file, if the kernel file is included, I can easily change the re-built kernel file.

So, I'm asking you.

how can I open the vmdk file?
