Netflixwould not be where it is right now without Orange is the New Black. Before becoming a streaming giant with global hits like Stranger Things and Wednesday, the then-fledgling streaming service struck gold with the drama starring Taylor Schilling which centered on a typically law-abiding woman's trip to prison. Hailed for its exploration of the prison system with an excellent, diverse cast of female inmates, it showed that Netflix was ready to compete with cable and established television networks. According to many of the cast members in a piece from The New Yorker, the Emmy-winning series was also an early example of the exploitative practices and unfair compensation that has plagued streaming over the past few years.

Across its seven-season run, Orange Is the New Black became, at the time, Netflix's most-watched series and longest-running series. Despite widespread popularity that turned its relatively-unknown female ensemble into near-overnight superstars, many of the series "recurring guest stars" were paid horribly. The stars who spoke out, including Kimiko Glenn, Emma Myles, Beth Dover, Alysia Reiner, Diane Guerrero, Taryn Manning, and Lea DeLaria, revealed that they were paid the SAG minimum day rate of under $900 per day with many having to stay on their day jobs to continue appearing in the series. "It actually COST me money to be in Season 3 and 4 since I was cast local hire and had to fly myself out, etc," Dover added. "But I was so excited for the opportunity to be on a show I loved so I took the hit. It's maddening."

Glenn revealed just how little residuals for a streaming series paid. While reruns on network television can sustain some actors for years, as is the case with Friends, streaming offers next to none of that money for those who contributed. With Netflix going global, things have only gotten more complicated and less lucrative as the options for earning residuals on foreign networks dwindle. Glenn took to TikTok in 2020 to show the continued compensation she had received for her 44 episodes on the show as Brook Soso which amounted to only $27.30. Myles, who appeared on 54 episodes, made only around $20 on residuals this year for the show compared to around $600 a year for several Law & Order guest appearances. That pay disparity is a massive reason why SAG has gone on strike as residuals have been almost entirely erased from the pay of a streaming actor while salaries are staying at a minimum.

As SAG-AFTRA pickets for better conditions for actors, the accounts of the OITNB cast are proof of why actors are fighting. The whole reason the union is picketing alongside their WGA brethren is to secure better pay and compensation into pensions and healthcare from streaming companies that continue to pay less and take a greater piece of the pie for the executives at the top and the wealthy shareholders among other protections. Residuals are key to this. Considering how much viewership the biggest shows on a platform like Netflix draw, bringing residuals in line with theatrical and linear network releases will be a monumental step toward making the industry fair for everyone who works in it.

Even with all of its issues, this ever-growing list of the best Netflix shows is a key reason why Netflix remains fairly high on our best streaming services list. Even when they lose something, a new title joins the ranks.

After being canceled after just one season at Max, this beautifully realized, bizarre sci-fi series has crash-landed on Netflix. "Scavengers Reign" follows a series of survivors from a damaged interstellar spaceship who find themselves stranded on a hostile, alien planet. Split across the planet's surface, our crewmates face all manner of strange sights and threats as they wait for rescue. It's an emotional, visual treat, and Netflix are rumored to be interested in continuing the story (though no decision's been made yet).

With the arrival of "Sweet Tooth" season 3, this hopeful fantasy series has now come to an end. Taking place in a version of the world which was forever changed a decade ago by "The Sick", a viral pandemic that wiped out most of the population. This tragedy coincides with the births of human-animal hybrid children. With that as the backdrop, we follow Gus (Christian Convery), a 10-year-old half-deer, half-human hybrid child on a perilous search to find his mother, alongside the gruff loner Tommy Jepperd.

Vincent (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a talented puppeteer and the creative force behind a children's television show. His world is shattered when his nine-year-old son (Ivan Morris Howe) vanishes without a trace while walking to school. Consumed by grief and guilt, Vincent struggles to come to terms with the loss. In his desperation, he finds solace in his son's drawings of a blue monster puppet named Eric. Convinced that bringing Eric to life on his television show will somehow bring his son back home, Vincent becomes increasingly obsessed with this idea. As he pours all his energy into creating Eric, Vincent's grip on reality begins to slip, blurring the lines between hope and delusion.

Need a getaway and a thrill? Then it's time to tag along with Assane Diop, a thief inspired by the fictional 'gentleman thief' Arsne Lupin. Diop's whole life has been a series of moments where he saw his family being poorly treated by the rich. So he does what all daring menaces to high society do: set out for revenge. His target? The art, jewels and cash owned by the wealthy.

Claire Foy and Matt Smith ("Doctor Who") garnered praise from critics and audiences alike for their portrayals of Queen Elizabeth II and Philip the Duke of Edinburgh in the first two seasons of "The Crown" which made it a must for our list of best Netflix shows. Later seasons introduced Elizabeth Debicki and Dominic West as Diana and Charles, with the final chapter, "The Crown" season 6, introducing Ed McVey as Prince William, Meg Bellamy as Kate Middleton and Luther Ford as Prince Harry.

If you haven't seen "Maid", but can enjoy TV when it's rivetingly tense, you need to open your eyes to one of the best shows on Netflix. Alex (Margaret Qualley, in the performance of a lifetime), is trying to escape an emotionally abusive relationship with her husband Sean (Nick Robinson), and take her young daughter (Rylea Neveah Whittet) with her.

And she does so in the middle of the night, in the first of many chaotic moments. Trying to make it on her own, Alex struggles to find work, and has to settle for being a maid. Her mother Paula (Andie MacDowell, Qualley's real-life mother) doesn't help at all, as she's the most unstable person in this story, and often takes Sean's side.

It's time to meet "You", your next guilty pleasure binge watch. A thrilling drama, You is the talk of social media these days thanks to how much the show plays with our own addictions to Instagram and other apps. It focuses on a bookstore manager named Joe, who falls in love with/stalks the heck out of Beck (Elizabeth Lail), a grad student. One of the best shows on Netflix, and one with a strong following, "You" will conclude with one final season in 2024.

Believe it or not, chess is en vogue once more. In The Queen's Gambit, Anya Taylor-Joy (Emma) stars as Beth Harmon, a prodigious master of the chessboard who wants to be the very best in the world. Not only does Taylor-Joy captivate on-screen, but this is a beautifully shot show that's already earned think-pieces about its gorgeously designed spaces.

If you're looking for an intense and action-packed crime series, check out the greatest heists this side of Danny Ocean. The beautifully-shot series tracks the crews led by The Professor, who aims to take rob the Royal Mint of Spain and the Bank of Spain. This Spanish-language show zigs and zags all over the place, with flash-backs and time jumps to keep you on your toes. You even have to be concerned with the ol' "unreliable narrator" conceit, which adds even more intrigue. The series has ended, so you can binge it all now!

For us, at first, Ozark suffered from what I like to call "Didn't we just watch this?" Syndrome. Jason Bateman and Laura Linney star as "Marty" and Wendy Byrde, who get into the dark, seedy underworld to make ends meet. While early reviews were mixed, season 3 gives a giant stage for Laura Linney to thrive on screen. One of the biggest shows ending in 2022, Ozark is without a doubt one of the best shows on Netflix.

Thought we had enough crime dramas? Think again. Mindhunter brought cinema-quality visuals and strong character development to the genre, and took us back in crime to the 1970s as police began to track serial killers. Excellent acting and moody writing help make it one of the best Netflix series. Frustratingly, Mindhunter has apparently been put on an indefinite hiatus, so we don't know if or when season 3 will happen.

The first five seasons of "Peaky Blinders" has spanned a decade of crime drama in Birmingham, England. The series, driven by Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later) starring as the upwardly criminal Tommy Shelby, started off slow but currently moves at a breakneck pace. And Peaky Blinders the show is finally over, as season 6 just hit Netflix. A movie is to follow.

"Breaking Bad" is a story about disease, drugs, family, profit, power and much, much more. High school chemistry teacher Walter White needs money for his cancer treatment, and realizes he can profit from scientific know-how by cooking meth. Breaking Bad is not just one of the best Netflix shows, but one of the top series ever.
