A volunteer at our bike co-op has a three speed with a broken indicator spindle with the threads of the spindle broken inside the hub. What’s the best suggestion for getting that out?

You are going to have to dismantle it. Have no fear, Sheldon Brown’s website will get you through the process, if you can understand lefty loosely, righty tighty, and it doesn’t hurt to have some janitor skills as well, to clean it up a bit while you are at it. The hub is stuck in third gear, and there is a bit that could come out of the threads inside of it, so, don’t use it as is.

If you can locate a donor hub, better yet a donor rear wheel, swapping out the core might be the easiest option to get the bike going again.
