Here is something I have never seen before and based upon the asking can not afford to own, but a cool hub.  http://www.ebay.ca/itm/NOS-1930s-40s-BSA-DP-Dual-Purpose-2-Speed-Fixed-and-or-Free-Bicycle-Hub-/271405892748?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f310d448c#ht_2810wt_1127

This is an amazing hub I never knew existed so can't add any info about.  I have had good experience buying from the fellow who is offering it.  William Benett has put together a nice website catering to the classic British bicycle.  threespeedhub.com  My favorite section of this is the old literature he's scaned for our pleasure.  His site is the only referance I've found for the Cyclo-Witmy deralluer that came on my 1948 Claude Butler.

I saw that hub as well and was (am) fascinated. It may even be worth the money. But in the last couple years I've ridden a lot on AW hubs and the S3X as well as a single speed fixed gear. I haven't come to any conclusion about anything, but as much as I like the S3X it really doesn't offer more than either of the other options. Yes, it's a three speed; and yes it's a fixed gear; but it is neither a BETTER three speed nor a BETTER fixie.  So I suspect this BSA hub, while super cool, might not be that special for riding.
