Hi folks,

While I was looking for Raleigh cranks online, this came up in the local Craigslist.  I don't know anything about it, or know enough to know what it is, except the derailleur looks early.  The ad was then posted on the Bob list and someone suggested it be cross posted here.  So I am.

cheers,

That's a 1930s Sports. It's been modified with a derailleur. I've got a 1934 and have spent some time learning about them. It appears that the seller doesn't really know much about what they are trying to sell.

This one could use a fair amount of work. It's rare to see a bike that's 80+ years old and in good original condition. The trouble is that by the time you get it in shape, you've spent more than what you can sell it for. (No one should consider the old bike hobby a financially lucritive venture). It's a rabbit hole you jump into, though kind of a fun one.

I've attached a photo of mine.

That's a Trivelox model B derailleur, early 30's. It is primitive, but it works remarkably well. I have one on my Fothergill to shift between two cogs on the AW hub, for as nice a 6-speed transmission as you can get on a 1930's bicycle.

John, you should buy that Sports. The handlebar alone is worth a hundred bucks on ebay, not that I would ever suggest you part it out. Looks all original, even the saddle.

I had an old Raleigh that my Uncle who worked at Cyclo fixed up for me to ride in 1946002.jpg

What a lovely Raleigh! The CR18 alloy rims suggest it’s a rider, not a wall hanger. All else looks correct. But when it comes to steel rims in the rain, there’s a fine line between originality and foolhardiness.
