Perhaps the primary purpose of this forum is not intended to be a swap
meet but nevertheless I remain curious if vintage British 26" x 1-3/8"
stainless steel rims (or complete wheel set: 32h front / 40h rear) are
available from anyone apart of the group? How much do these typically
fetch for locally? I understand that Araya made a replica for a spell.
Also, Rigida currently makes them however I have not yet found a
distributer.

I think that Stainless steel is both considerably heavier and less
strong than carbon steel or chromoly steel.

I think this is the rim you are thinking of:
http://www.rigida.com/en/products/single-wall-rims/stainless-steel/st32
it comes in a number of sizes, including 26" x 1-3/8"

It's made of 18/10 SS, which is what's commonly used in Flatware.

This looks like the same one.

http://www.storm-denmark.dk/da_z/contact/

they also have the other sizes

Does anyone speak Danish? I suppose you could use google translate
and send them an email from the website and work out a shipping / payment
arrangement.

here's more sites in germany I think selling is the same rim in the 28
x 1 1/2 / 635x22 (700B) Size.
http://www.webbike.de/onlineshop/product_info.php?products_id=3928
or this one with a machined textured sidewall?

700C size

here it is in 559 26" MTB size

Why not use the SUN CR - 18 size 590 cm available in polished 32 - 36
- 40 drillings.

It has a bead hook and will hold tyres on better than the straight
side rims.

here is a Pic with the Panaracer Col de la vie , which are a bit
fatter than the 1 3/8" tyres. A great riding tyre.

I'd personally prefer the Velocity Blunt 650B Rims, silver or black,
36H (there is also white in the 32H size)
http://www.everybicycletire.com/shopping/pc-1508-24-650b-velocity-blunt-584-36h-nmsw-silver.aspx

http://www.velocityusa.com/default.asp?contentID=633

with Grand Bois 42mm 650b tire - white, Black, or Rust-Red color
http://www.longleafbicycles.com/products/components/tires/gran-bois-hetre/

it's a disc-specific rim so you'd use a drum brake, like the X-FDD
(70mm) or XL-FDD (90mm) Drum/Dynamo.
http://www.sturmey-archer.com/products/hubs/cid/2/id/30
And a drum or coaster in the rear

ends up looking like this - spectacular!!!

The only source I've found for ss rims is in france. Yes,
Rigida. Sigh. The only other option is keep your eye open for old
used bikes with them. My next trip and I'll load up but who knows
when that will be.

SS considerably heavier than cromo or mild steel? hardly.

for 1 cubic inch of material:
abs plastic .0394 lbs
polycarbonate 0.0441
aluminum .0975
titanium (6A1-4v) 0.163
cast iron .2583
carbon steel (1018) .0283
cromo (4140) 0.283
carbon steel 0.2843
stainless 0.2896
nickel-colbalt steel 0.2981
silver 0.3793
lead 0.4097
gold 0.698
tungsten 0.6987

Of course the exact ratios of the various materials used to make
steel and aluminum alloys will change the actual weight and from what
I learned in metallurgy, every single batch of metal is slightly
different despite mfg claims of quality and consistency.

And the strength is another subject.

When it comes to rims, steel rims in general are a typically heavier
than aluminum rims.
But I've seen some aluminum rims heavier than some steel rims.

If you want to be more authentic in your bike restoration work, ss is
tops. Looks more like chrome plated mild steel and won't rust. But
if you want a faster ride, plastic rules.

I was basing my SS vs. cromo thoughts on the Tubus racks that are
available in both SS and Chromo.

for example Tubus Fly (their smallest rack)
Cromo weighs 330 grams (11.5 ounces)
the SS version is 369 grams (13 ounces)

So I guess you could be expecting with the wheel rims maybe an ounce
or two extra per wheel.
Of course when you are talking about weight at the rim/tire there is a
flywheel / gyroscope effect.
If you were worried about weight you'd prob. not be riding an old
3-speed anyway.

4130 Chromo has a tensile strength of about 80k psi to 230psi
depending on heat treat and temper.
SS is only a tiny bit less but with heat treating prob. really close.
I think high quality aluminum is around 75k

SS IT IS NOT RESISTANT TO MURATIC ACID!!! It will discolor really badly.

That's a nice looking bike. Thanks for sharing. Are those grips original? If not, where did you find them?

What is the crank setup on that Rollfast?

I asks lots of question.

Thanks,
