Neighbors,

A few days ago I noticed that the a large section of copper grounding wire that goes up the side of the utility pole in front of my house had been stolen.  I walked up my block and found that the thief had also taken a large section of every one of the grounding wires from every utility pole on my block (4600 block of Arts Street).  He stole the bottom 7 or 8 feet of the wire.  I called Entergy to tell them and they sent a technician out who repaired the pole in front of my house as well as my entire block. One of my neighbors has been robbed of copper on his house twice in the last few weeks, so I wanted to let everyone know about this as we may have a thief preying on our neighborhood's copper.

For safety sake, it might be a good idea to check the poles in front of your home to see if the pole servicing your home and your neighbors' homes have been hit (sorry, I only checked my block).  If so, Entergy will come fix it.  Just call their customer service at 1-800-ENTERGY.

Happy New Year,

Tim Chauvin

We had a similar incident about a year ago (4600 block of Demontluzin) and Entergy told us that wire is very important for grounding purposes.  So, be vigilant everybody and check your utility poles.  Entergy comes out almost immediately to remedy the problem.

I reported three cut copper light pole ground wires to Entergy today.  The inspector called me back and suggested we contact the Council Member in our district and avail them of this activity as Entergy has regular meeting with the City Council where a discussion on countermeasures against theft in GT would provoke action.  This thread brought me out to look at the poles and make my discovery, but these wires look to have been cut some time ago which makes me question the timeline of events.  Also the Entergy rep told me that some of the poles were owned by AT&T, however the three I took note of were all NOPSI (Entergy) poles.

I tried to make a report with NOPD, but the responding officers said that in part, since Entergy was the owner and not me, I was not allowed to make the report.  Hopefully if this is brought to City Council's attention, they will be able to do something with it.  Does anyone have the contact info for our City Council contact person?

I am glad that my Email may have helped you Tim and Chele.  Hopefully Entergy will get to your poles quickly.  I had a great response from them.

Happy New Year,

Lindsey Darnell is the contact for Councilman Jared Brossett.
Her email address is ldar...@nola.gov.
She responds quickly to requests so as a start, you can ask her for the current laws regarding the sale of scrap copper.   What identification is the seller required to provide to the purchaser to prevent the types of theft we are experiencing.
This may be an issue of enforcement of current laws as opposed to the need for new laws.

I wrote Lindsey Darnell this email:

To Lindsey Darnell:

Please be advised that very many power poles in the Gentilly Terrace area have had their grounding wire(s) cut and stolen.  It is obvious to us that the thief is taking the copper to scrap yards where it can be sold for several dollars per pound.  We, that is neighbors via a discussion group, have contacted Entergy and NOPD about these thefts and were apprised that we should contact our district Council Member in order to allow you to speak to this issue during one of your meetings with Entergy representatives.  These copper grounding wires protect the pole in the event of a lightning strike and though Entergy told me that I was not under any danger, I assure you that the NEC does not have these wires installed for no reason.  I appreciate the opportunity to reach out to your office and thank you for your time.

I received this reply today:

Hi Mr. Eskew,

Thank you for reaching out to our office and informing us of this issue. I will inform Councilmember Brossett of this, and contact Entergy as well.

As soon as I receive an update, I will be sure to contact you with that information. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or need additional assistance.

Thanks again, and have a great day,
Lindsey

Email Kari Freese  kfr...@entergy.com directly
on this & mention Marian Jackson recommended u contact her directly. She is a tennis friend & entergy's liaison w public. She gets immediate results. On one of my succession listings in Venetian isles we were having problems w gas turn on due to service men showing up & leaving before time plumber was scheduled. Kari had them go back immediately & had gas back on within hours. Before contacting her the executor wasted 15 days
Seeking results through other means. Happy new year! Hope this helps. If the copper was previously stolen I could understand hesitation in replacing it. Perhaps entergy has some other material. Good luck
