Join us at Genspace for a talk about Sponges!

Biology encapsulates models

for self-organization and complex network systems. It expands notions of real-time experience, controlled and spontaneous events, organic and computational frameworks. It inspires new models for self assembly. It sheds new light on

large scale

communication and collective cooperative actions of the many as one.

Enter, the sea sponge! It
has no nervous, digestive or circulatory system, yet it's one of the most successful organisms in nature.
The
patterns, structure and materials found in sponges have come to inspire
engineers, architects, artists, designers, alongside of scientists.

Ella Sieradzki will join us to discuss these fascinating aquatic animals.

Here is how she describes it:

Everybody likes coral reefs. They're colorful, they're full of living creatures and they're high on conserva
tion experts' priorities. Most people don't know that a lot of the building blocks of those reefs are not corals at all. Sponges are the most ancient multi-cellular animals still existing today. They are a prolific source of natural products used for medicinal drugs,  cosmetics and anti-biofouling materials. Sponges also harbor a diverse microbial community within their tissues. This talk is a small taste of the beauty,  symmetry and harmony that is the world of sponges.

Ella Sieradzki is a biologist who researches sponges and their associated bacteria. She has
instructed aquatic invertebrates courses, and is an avid SCUBA diver with over 200 dives in the Red Sea, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. She earned her B.S. and M.S. with honors, from Tel Aviv University, Israel.

Genspace is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting culture, innovation and education in molecular biology for both children and adults. We work inside and outside of traditional settings,  providing a safe,  supportive environment for training and mentoring in biotechnology. In the summer of 2010,  we built the first-ever community laboratory,  a facility where we design workshops,  train students and innovate new technologies. As a membership-based community lab,  we offer New Yorkers the opportunity to work on their own projects in a safe,  Biosafety level 1 facility.

Looking forward to seeing you!
