My name is Tang Guanhua and I’m the founder of AnotherLand Project since 2009. AnotherLand is the first mainland China based non-profit organization with a mission to develop and service Intentional Communities.
In 2010, I built “Self-Sustainability Experimental Lab” with my co-founder Xing Zhen in Laoshan, Qingdao.
From scratch, we started researching and learning about essential technologies for sustainable living, and open-sourced our developments.
Over six years, we built our own ‘homeland’ bit by bit, and were joined by more and more “Homeland” volunteers.
In 2016, we moved to Fuzhou, Fujian, and embarked on “AnotherLand 2.0: Co-living Experiment”.
We hoped to realize a new form of family, where the responsibilities of child-rearing and elderly care are shared among all members, and everlasting love is made possible.
Community experiments like this was a ‘simulation’ of the reality of human society, and came with many real challenges.
Meanwhile, many like-minded members survived the initial run-in period. Together, we set out to seek and create new ways of living.
With the help of ZhenRo Foundation. we obtained 333,333.5m² of local land for infrastructure, farming and construction. During 2016 and 2017, the vision of ”Southern Life” was slowly becoming a reality.
However, our construction came to a forced stop due to local policy change. This was a hard blow for many community members, including myself.
Early 2020 saw the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic. Over the next two years, Southern Life community had an average population of 10, with a new baby born in 2022.
As the pandemic swept through the globe, our life in the community went on peacefully and steadily
Until another unexpected downturn in 2022, which led to termination of our local land lease. We lost the land, but we did not lose hope. This is the beginning of AnotherLand 3.0. We set out to seek a new ‘homeland’.
Now, I call for you to join us in ‘Another Land’. To exit a consumption-heavy urban lifestyle, this might have once been a distant future for you, but the future has already arrived, so has a normalized state of crises. We must refuse to be assimilated. We must reclaim life. We just act.
AnotherLand remains dedicated to its mission: to unite the explorers of diverse ways of living, to provide another possibility of life for our common future as humans.
“AnotherLand” is not anti-urbanization. It is about the freedom of choice between city and rural living. ”AnotherLand” is not anti-technology. It is about the integration of technology and nature. “AnotherLand” is not an ascetic trial of human limits. It is about a more comfortable and healthy way of living. Meanwhile, “AnotherLand” is not a romantized Xanadu or an escapist seclusion. ”AnotherLand” is a land of construction and creation, with the aims to fulfill fundamental human needs of security and happiness, and to defend our rights in choosing ways of living in the future. ”AnotherLand” belongs to everyone, just as ‘Homeland’ belongs to everyone. But it also needs everyone. Every bit of today’s efforts is a contribution towards tomorrow. We hope, against the looming global environment crisis and the shadow of war and disaster, our next generation could still have a childhood, and our generation may live out our days in dignity.
”AnotherLand” welcomes any form of help. Namely, we need land, volunteers, and financial support. We look forward to blazing new trails with you.
