Hi,

I am trying to create a large network potentially with close to hundreds of routers and tens of hosts. But it seems that certain rack has a limit on the number of nodes I can create. For instance, on the Illinois InstaGENI, there are always two to three nodes that fails to boot. Are these valid statement?

Thanks
Zihao

Hello Zihao,

To my knowledge there is no per-user limit on the number of nodes you
can create on a GENI rack. Of course, a given rack can only support a
certain number of VMs or raw machines.

However, you will very likely see failures when you try to create a
large topology in one request. It is best to build large topologies
incrementally. See [1] for a tutorial on scaling up experiments. The
presentation at this link describes one way to do this: Create a "shared
VLAN" and incrementally add VMs to it. If this "shared VLAN" is a
stitched VLAN, you can create a large topology with VMs from multiple racks.

If you use ExoGENI racks, there is a lot more flexibility in making
changes to your topology, including growing it. See [2]

To find out the number of VMs and raw PCs available on a GENI rack, see [3].
