What is the easiest way to set up a virtual machine using the Kali Linux RSpec on GENI?

We have created a "Kali Linux Lite" image for our experiments. Here are the instructions:
  1. Drag a single Xen VM with default settings
  2. Select your preferred site aggregate.
  3. Click on the node and then in the left-hand panel select the Disk Image pull-down and choose Other.
  4. In the URN slot paste the image URL: https://www.instageni.clemson.edu/image_metadata.php?uuid=ad8630d1-89c9-11e8-b707-000000000000
You can find what tools are installed in this "image" here: http://mountrouidoux.people.cofc.edu/CyberPaths/kaliLite.html. We tried to create an ISO on Exogeni but this did not work for us.

Thank you so much, Dr. X !

In Summer 2018, you gave me the opportunity to attend the Workshop in Charleston, for which I am grateful to you.

I used to be able to log into nodes on GENI using PuTTY , but since Saturday, March 25, I am getting timeouts or other errors.
Have you or your students encountered this problem ?  I have sent an email about this to he...@geni.net.

Thanks again !

Hello Ramachandra and Dr. Mountrouidou,

On ExoGENI, links below can be used to create VMs on ExoGENI.

Also, I would like to mention ExoGENI Getting Started Tutorial that can be found on ExoBlog page.

On ExoGENI, users can create, store and use own images. Links below can be useful to review in this respect.

On a previous conversation in geni-orca-users list , we had talked about creating an image for Metasploitable VM on ExoGENI, but the problem for that case was about the OS version which was not compatible with neuca-guest-tools. For building Kali Linux image, neuca-guest-tools installation on the image will be the key step. We recommend keeping experimental traffic within dataplane as well.

Best regards,

Mert

Dear Sir:

Sorry to bother you -- but when I try to ssh into a node, I get the message: Connection timed out (I get this message all the time).
Is there a way out ?

Ramachandra

Oddly I get this error when I try a single VM but when I tried this with an RSpec it got reserved. Can you try this RSpec:

One of the VMs is supposed to be the one that you pen test (the "test") VM. I was able to login to the attacker and I tried this with GA Tech and Clemson aggregates.

Yes, that works ! Thank you.

But I cannot add any more tools to the attacker, as I am not "root."  Can I  somehow log in as "root" to the attacker ?

A GENI User has root access to all GENI VMs created by you. All you have to do is to

"sudo bash"

to get a root shell. You will not be prompted for a password.
