Hi all,
In our last meeting, the question was raised: Should we include captive and “extinct in the wild” species/populations?
To summarise the discussion:
Other teams have come across this question too, e.g. where unique genetic diversity exists in the captive population. In Europe this is also relevant to salmonids, where captive stocks are raised in hatcheries to be released. There are also lots of crop wild relatives that are cropped for conservation purposes, but not distinguished at the species level, partially domesticated and partially managed wild. The team acknowledge that there is a gradient of “captivity” and “domestication”. These populations may be included, but need to be identified separately if they are managed in such as way as to impact natural selection (e.g. controlled breeding). Please add a note to the population if it is an intensively managed population.
Please comment if you have further ideas on this topic!
