Subject: Summer CSA Week 6
Monday: Whew! This was one hot and toasty day. At first it did not feel so bad, and then the storm came rolling in with cool air and lots of wind. But, no rain really and then it passed, and the sun came out and we got hot fast. I did hear it was pretty bad in some area up by you, so I hope all it well with you. Picking gets tough in this kind of weather. I was sweating so hard I could not keep drinking water fast enough. Finally, I came in and just let the sweat subside and drank yet another bottle of water.
Now that the day is winding down, I went out to pick a few things for lunch tomorrow and realized it was now quite nice. This is the time of the day I really enjoy. Everyone is gone and the day is winding down. The birds are flitting about, the air is cool. The evening light is subdued. So, I head out to the back field and just enjoy solitude - me and nature. The trees rustle in the breeze. The birds dive and swoop to gather their last meal of the night. I look over the crops and just simply unwind. Then, I head in and prepare myself for tomorrow.
Tuesday: I awoke with the dawn this morning and sat watching the field and sky as I drank my morning coffee. I could see a heavy haze out over the fields to my west. Then, as I sat and watched it rolled over the corn field and down into my field, heading east. It was a rather amazing thing to watch. Amazed, yes, but then the realization dawned that haze meant a super humid day with high temperatures. That reality made me hustle up and get moving so I could work while the day was relatively cool. As it turns out it is indeed a scorcher, but not quite as bad as yesterday. The picking seemed a bit better and I think we are all moving just a tad quicker. Wednesday is supposed to be better. Let us hope. This extreme heat does not make crops overly happy
Your box
Savoy cabbage - savoy is more tender than regular green cabbage. Try grilling it whole. Core it, stuffing the core with a boullion cube and a stick of butter. Place in a well seasoned grill that is not too hot on a round of foil, and cover, letting it steam for an hour to two hours depending on the temperature of the grill. I just tried this and it is delicious.
Cherries - Hillside Orchards
Blueberries - Hillside Orchards
Red onion - Cabernet is the type - the storm today knocked these guys down, so I decided this was out onion of the week
Cucumbers - American slicers
Lettuce head
Golden beets - very sweet
Kohlrabi - the last until fall. Try slicing into jullienne strips and topping a salad. I also will add it to my shish ka bobs.
Basil - supposed to be in last week's box, but it did not get packed. You will receive regular basil, thai basil, purple basil or lemon basil. They are all fun.
Your poor guesser farmer lady is giving next week's box a whirl: I think we will have red beets, kale (cuz it is going goofy), green beans, zucchini, cucumbers, blueberries, cherries (they are out of season fast), . . . I will take a whirl around and see what else may be ready. Corn and cantaloupe may be ready for the week after this - I hope.
