Subject: Summer CSA Week 12

Eggs: This week only weekly folks get eggs.  Unless, I have made a specific arrangement for you to get make up eggs, do not take eggs if you are a bi-weekly egg share.

I am back in Illinois and hard at work.  It is good to be back but also a bit overwhelming as I look at all there is to do.  This does happen when on e is away, but the realization never seems to come easy.  I think the first thing that discouraged me was tomatoes.  Here we are at tomato season and the rains come pouring in.  Saturday's inch and a half caused the tomatoes to split wide open.  I know this happens to home gardeners, but they can still salvage edible portions of the tomatoes.  I can do that for me, but they sure don't work too well for sending out in a box.  I am going to do my best to get them picked off the plants, and hope for little rain before the next batch ripen up.  I am not sure I am meant to be a tomato farmer.  It really is frustrating to have to throw away so many tomatoes.  The really bad ones the guys toss into the corn field.  The remainder they bring into me to make a decision.  Then, I throw even more away.  Erghhh!

At present we are in the midst of another rain storm, so the prospects of pretty tomatoes looks less likely all the time.  Double erghhh!

Your box

Fairy Tale eggplant - small little purple striped babies - excellent grilled.

Cantaloupe - with the rains coming in I wanted you to have it again before they start to diminish in flavor

Sweet corn - this corn is from Lowell Ioeger, an organic farmer a little south of me, whom I have known for years.

Bell Peppers

Basil

Cucumber

Beets
