Subject: Summer CSA Week 20

One more week for summer CSA after this week.

Eggs: This week only weekly egg share holders receive eggs.  Watch the squares for week 20.  Only take eggs if it says egg in your square.

Glory be!  Greenhouse four is now repaired and ready for plastic.  Hot diggity.  If the weather permits, the new plastic will go on Wednesday.  Then, we can take greenhouse three apart and begin the process of rebuilding it.  Since we had greenhouse four taken apart, I had the guys dig a four foot deep trench so I could have a frost free water line run from the well in three to greenhouse four.  Now, I have a frost free faucet to water with.  How I am going to love that come winter.  In the past I have ad to drag a hose outside on one house and over to the other house so I could water.  So, out the door, through the snow, into the other house. Then at the end, I would have to reverse the process holding the hose up in the air so the water in it drained out so it could not freeze in the hose.  Nothing worse than a hose frozen solid in the winter.   Now I am going to have the luxury of  water in that hoop house.  I am a happy camper.

Now, when my guys dug the four foot deep trench they were not so happy.  Two of them almost gave up.  The other two were furious that they were being wimps. So, I had four guys - two on each side of the issue - at war over a four foot deep trench.  When I got home from market and discovered the tension, I merely jumped in and started digging the trench with them.  Talk about two men quickly changing their position on how easy it was to dig a trench four feet deep.  Funny, how a five foot female can make a guy jump to it!  Sure didn't want to be shown up by the hefa.

Over the next three days we will work on finishing up pepper picking in light of the frost warning for Wednesday night.  We made it through one warning, but may not be so lucky this time around.  My plants are still pretty full of peppers, many too small, but we will pick, pick, pick.  Happy days!  I did have the eggplant mowed down, along with the basil.  It is time.  And, it was a rewarding year with pepper productions.

On a personal note: My sister works on the farm, making all the CSA boxes.  She became ill three weeks ago and has had to stop working.  The guys and I have taken over her job, along with all the other tasks we routinely take care of.  My nephew, her son, is my delivery person, so Angela is filling in this week, and has not done the route in a while, so she may run late.   Currently, she is inpatient in intensive care, and thus my mind and body are a bit preoccupied.  Please let me know if we mess up anywhere along the line so we can fix it the following week.  Thanks

We will keep your sister in our prayers and you too. It must be difficult having so much heaviness on your heart.

On a lighter note, your story of the men digging the ditch reminds me of the folk singer, John Mccutchin and his song "Father's Grumble", it's about a man complaining that he does all the work around the house and so the wife says, well, why don't you do my work for the day and I'll do yours and then he finds out how he couldn't do half of her work in a single day and she could do more than him anyday.  It's quite funny and it speaks of you! :)

thinking of you,
Karen Liebold
