Subject: Summer CSA Week 14
It seems like so many crop s are beginning to come in strong. Farming is a job where one sows - and then, literally, waits for the fruits of their labors to come in. This season is fun for me. I just love watching the crops come in strong. This summer so many of our short day cycles just did not prosper due to the weather patterns we have had. But, it just has not been a good year for greens. They will come back now that fall is in the air. All things have a season. As someone recently pointed out to me, tis better to rejoice in what we do have rather than lamenting what we do not have. And, we have lots of nice things beginning.
Wow! What a change in the weather we just experienced! Nothing like a swinging of the thermostatic pendulum. Fortunately, it s not going to last. It seems this year has been characterized by extremes. Excessive cool. Excessive heat. Excessive rains. Excessive dryness. Ping pong weather patterns. Every year I dub the year with a term that characterizes it. This may well end up being dubbed the year of the extremes. A little early to decide for sure, but I am sure leaning on that tag for the year.
My guys like the cool weather. One of them says there are two temperatures: nice or sweating. He likes nice, which can be ten below. Now, I am more in line with liking 75 to 85 degrees - that nice comfort range. But, I have learned to function no matter what the temps. I just smile a bit more when it is 75 to 85. But, I think I move a bit faster when it is cooler, so perhaps that is a good thing, getting done earlier. Today the guys hustled, but it had nothing to do with the weather. They knew they could leave for a holiday break as soon as the crops were picked, so they were really motivated.
Your box
Plums - this variety is a Stanley Plum, from Mick Klug Farm. They, as with all the fruit I send, need to ripen a couple of days to fully develop. I can't send out fully ripe fruit or it will get smushed along the way. I am sending out a pint of plums, but I placed them in a quart container so they won't roll out.
Pears - these are Bartlett from Mick Klug
Apples - Ida Red, one of my favorites - from Hillside Orchards
Italian Roasting peppers - these are excellent stuffed and grilled, but also very sweet and tasty raw. I like to slice them in rings to add to a salad. I also cut up rings, and top a cracker that is overlaid with cheese for a nice tasty treat.
Leeks - these are great added to potatoes for potato leek soup
Cucumber
Bell pepper
Eggplant - Eggplant will take on any flavor you place with it. In many ways this is a nice attribute of eggplant, because it makes it very versatile. I like garlic and onion with my eggplant. Most often I either grill it or saute it. Try eggplant, diced with leeks and pepper, sauted together.
Cabbage - Tried fried cabbage with leeks - yum
