Subject: Summer csa Week 9

First note:  I think folks may be a little confused on when to pick up their eggs.  This is week 9.  This is the week that weekly and bi-weekly people get eggs.  Then next week, the 10th week, only weekly egg folks get eggs.  Please watch the delivery sheet for the word egg to be written in the square for the week.  If you thin I have a mistake, please let me know.

I must confess I am getting mighty weary of the heat.  It makes it very difficult to work in the field and it is doing unpleasant things to various crops, none of which do I like very much.   The cucumber patch bit the dust, although the new one is coming in just a bit, so they will be back strong soon.  Some pepper varieties are sun scalding.  Ergh!  The tomatoes are doing ok in the heat, but the heavy rain caused the cherries to split open.   The weeds are very happy though.  They are just tickled pink that we have been too hot or wet to cultivate them.

My workers and myself are tired.  The heat has worn us down.  We have worked really hard to keep up pace, but it does not happen in this weather.  So, we have worked long hours and gotten less done than normal.  That part gets frustrating not only to me, but to my workers who want to do a good job.  Today I simply cut back and sent them home to get some rest.  I will go back out at 7:00 or 7:30 to pick a but more, but I just can't ask them to go beyond what they have already done.  And, as for me, I feel I have nothing left to give.  No more pieces of this pie are available for the taking.

Second note: I will be going a away for a week next Wednesday for a much needed rest.  I will be gone from the 10th through the 19th.  Because this will be difficult for my workers, I am asking that no one ask for a location switch for the time I will be away.  Thank you for understanding my need to get away and my workers ability to accomplish everything.

Your box

Cantaloupe - very tasty

Red cabbage

Bell peppers - first of the year, with many more to come

Basil

Zucchini

Red leaf lettuce

Salad Green, Ruby Streaks or Arugula - finally a baby green that did not bolt

Next week - We will have sweet corn, peaches, nectarines, apples, beans (hopefully), perhaps those illusive cherry tomatoes and . . . TBA.
