He possibly had a nervous breakdown from the grief of losing his wife and then mother, seeing one of his sisters placed in a lunatic asylum only to die there, lose another sister from 'flu and finally spend a whole lifetime supporting his mother and unmarried sisters - without help.

But once his supporters had given him some measure of financial security and a safe house - even though it was a lunatic asylum - he blossomed and started to paint beautiful psychedelic images in a day and age when psychedelics were unknown.

So he explored the depths of distortion. But Wain was not mad - he made it plain he could paint as he had always painted, before the burden of responsibilty and grief became too much.

All he needed was appreciation and support
