The Internet Archive Wayback Machine contains petabytes
of data (1000 terabytes each), eclipsing the amount of text
contained in the world's largest libraries, including the Library
of Congress. The size of the world's total digital content
exceeds 500 exabytes. According to IDC (International
Data Corporation), noted in The Expanding Digital Universe
(pdf), and annual current surveys, total amount of global
data exceeds a zettabyte, as of 2010. "In 2006, the amount
of digital information created, captured, and replicated was
[estimated to be] . . . about 3 million times the information
in all the books ever written. . . . By 2007, the amount of
information created surpassed the storage capacity available."
"The use of paper in the world is still increasing (nearly 5%
in the last five years). But we have clearly hit a threshold --
where the digital universe is now pervasive enough to be
a major locale for commerce, education, social interaction,
and entertainment."
