On the 6th inst. a fine new ship, called the Hope, built for Mr. Joseph PIG, was launched from the building-yard of Messrs. FALCON and Co. at Workington.
Lancaster assizes commence this day.---There are about 40 prisoners for trial.
DARING ROBBERY.—On the evening of the 11th inst. about a quarter past seven o'clock, as Mr. GORE, linen-draper, of Liverpool, a Mr. GRIFFITHS, of Leeds,and a Mr. MESSENGER, of Manchester, were going to Liverpool in a post-chaise from Prescot, they were stopped about a quarter of a mile from the Infirmary, by three men, armed with pistols, one of whom ordered the driver to stop, which not being immediately attended to, he was fired at by the ruffian, but fortunately missed, they then presented each a pistol through the chaise windows, demanding money; from one gentleman they got ten guineas, and from another a one pound note, during which, Mr. Gore having secured his pocket-book, containing property to a considerable amount, under the seat of the chaise, and having dropped his watch into his boot, presented one of the robbers with half-a-guinea, wrapped up in a piece of use- [paragraph ends abruptly at this point]
The Assizes at York were finished at the Crown End on Friday se'nnight, where the following persons have been tried, viz. John ASHTON and Matthew NOBLE, for horse stealing; William PEAL, John LEIGHTON, Randal DALPAIN, alias William FENTON, and Richard WILKINSON, for sheep-stealing; David GIBSON, for stealing gold watches, and other articles, and James CARRITT, for returning from transportation before his time, all guilty, Death — Jonathan HAIGH, for buying stolen yarn, transported for 14 years.—Geo. HOBSON, for robbing a bleaching ground; Richard RHODES, for horse stealing; Mary GRANGER, William PEPPER, and Philip JAMES, for perjury; Christopher ALMOND, for stealing plate, &c. Thomas WHITE, for stealing a watch, all transported for seven years each—Mary HUNMORE, for perjury, two years imprisonment, and whipped; Richard SCHOLEFIELD and Matthew TAYLOR, for swindling, twelve months imprisonment —James BOLLON, for horse stealing, six months imprisonment—John POOL, for stealing linen, &c. to remain till next assizes—Hannah NAYLOR, Joseph STUDART, John DENS, Eliza SCHOLEFIELD, William CRAVEN, Mary JONES, William SIMPSON, N. SIMPSON, —— TRALEY, John WILSON, D. GIBSON, J. ELISON, and W. BUCKLE, were severally acquitted. No bills were found against Alvera NEWSOM, W. RILEY, W. BEST, Christopher BODY, Ann DODD, Mary SCOTT, Eliza MELVILL, and Ellen GRAVES.
On Monday se'nnight was killed, at the New-mill, near Alnwick, a fat boar, fed by Mr. P. EADINGTON, miller, weighing, when killed, 52 stone.
