LOCAL & DISTRICT NEWS................Part V
MICHAELMAS QUARTER SESSIONS. – The Quarter Sessions for the County
of Cumberland will be opened in the Crown Court, in Carlisle, on Tuesday.
Though there are 19 prisoners for trial, implicated in 14 offences, none of the
charges are of a very serious character. The following is a list of the
prisoners, together with the offences on which they will be
indicted:
ELLEN GILLAN, prostitute, Whitehaven, charged with being a rogue
and vagabond.
JANE KESWICK and MARY MORGAN charged with stealing a piece of black
rep, a piece of blue fancy stuff, a piece of grey fancy stuff, a pair of gloves,
a small vest, and a white shirt, the property of JOSEPH DUGGAN, at Whitehaven,
on the 20th July, 1874.
JOHN SMITH, charged with stealing numerous pieces of tweed, wool
shirtings, and trimmings, the property of WM. CARLYLE, at Whitehaven, on the
21st July, 1874.
JAMES HAYTON, charged with stealing £1 8s. in money, one cotton
shirt, and one pair of socks, the property of JOHN LANCASTER, at Penrith, on the
3rd August, 1874.
JAMES WILSON, charged with breaking and entering the dwelling house
of MALACHI WILLIAM DAVEY, at Stanwix, on the 1st August, 1874, and stealing
therein two cloth coats, one cloth waistcoat, one leather belt, three table
knives, and three table forks.
JAMES LOWTHER and WM. WILSON, charged with stealing a horse the
property of JOHN MARTON, in the parish of Harrington, on the 19th November,
1873.
JAMES LYON, charged with stealing 5s., the property of JOSEPH
FRIARS, at Whitehaven, on the 25th August, 1874.
SARAH THOMPSON, charged with stealing 7 lb. of cooked beef and two
silver skewers, the property of MR. L. HARRISON, of Penrith, on the 28th August,
1874.
JAMES CLARKE and WILLIAM CHARLTON, labourers, charged with breaking
and entering the dwelling-house of RICHARD RICHARDSON, at Irthington on the 3rd
September, 1874, and stealing therein a shirt, a pair of stockings, a woollen
scarf, a pair of scissors, a cotton handkerchief, a piece of soap, a box of
matches, and 1 lb. of sugar.
JOHN IRVING, charged with stealing a hand-saw, the property of MARY
HAYS, at Maryport, on the 15th September, 1874.
JOHN McKENZIE charged with stealing a silver watch, the property of
BETSY HODGSON, at Beaumont, on the 3rd September, 1874.
JAMES MORRISON and JOHN LOWTHER, charged with stealing two shirts
and a cap, the property of WM. McVITTIE, at Whitehaven, on the 26th September,
1874.
BENJAMIN MASON and WILLIAM MASON charged with breaking into a
blacksmith’s shop at Farlam, and stealing therein four £5 bank notes, the
property of WILLIAM SPROAT, on the 2nd Oct. 1874.
WILLIAM McHENRY, charged with indecently assaulting and
ill-treating BRIDGET GRIFFIN, in the parish of Cleator, on the 20th Sept.,
1874.
