Cumberland League
Reliable Defenders
"Reds" Beaten by Team of Tacticians
(Part 2)
There was a singular incident during the first half. ILEY, goalkeeper, had made a clearance from the bye-line and was returning to his goal when JENKINSON essayed a drive from 40 yards out.
McMULLEN rushed across the front of the sticks and boofed the first time with such strength that the stitching of the ball snapped and out came the bladder which burst with a loud report as a new ball was thrown in.
Two expensive, this, McMULLEN. Please economise in the future!
BURNS, Cockermouth's sprightly left-outside, ought to have scored twice when he was close in with ample time and room. Unfortunately his toe caught the ground before the ball on each occasion. He did get a "beauty," however, with a full drive from an angle, the ball glancing off the far post into the net. This goal followed a corner by WALLACE, THOMPSON punching the ball to the feet of the winger.
HARDY, combining with CORRIE, CLATER and WALLACE had netted previously when he slipped through a bunch of defenders, and CUMBERWORTH quickly equalized with a finely judged shot. ILEY touching but failing to hold.
THOMPSON and ILEY had a busy first half, especially the former, who, during one attack, blocked a rapid fire of shots by WALLACE, HARDY and SLATER, and later just managed to turn a low ball from MURRAY round an upright.
ILEY's outstanding feat was in saving from RICHARDSON, who screwed in a surprise shot from the right, the keeper leapng in time to snick the ball over the top. ILEY showed similar agility when clearing from DONALD and GRAHAM.
SLATER increased the home side's lead with a characteristic drive, the ball being helped home by a defender. Soon afterwards further efforts by SLATER (accepting from FERGUSON) and WALLACE at point blank range brought THOMPSON full length into the mud.
RICHARDSON and DIXON tested ILEY at the other end and for a time play was fast and exciting all along the line.
Finally MITCHELL handled and GLOVER converted a penalty kick.
SLATER, who was generally in position, nodded in a fifth after the ball had rebounded from THOMPSON from a hot shot by BURNS.
The "Reds" wing halves were not too reliable, and MITCHELL and TRAINOR had to do much covering-up. On the whole the visitors were not a poor team, but if any of the first eleven forwards are injured, none of the five who appeared at Cockermouth are fit to fill a breach—yet.
