Tuesday 30 Jun 1778 (p. 3, col. 1)
On Tuesday last died at Workington Hall, in the 51st year of his age, Henry CURWEN, Esq.; He married Isabella, daughter of the late William GALE, Esq.; of this town: was elected member of parliament for the city of Carlisle in 1761, and in 1768 was returned for this County. A character like Mr. CURWEN's must suffer by any attempt to describe it. In his domestic life he was the tender husband, parent, and friend; in his public capacity, he has been long and justly considered as the man of business and the gentleman: But the general sorrow for his death is the best eulogium. After laying in state, his remains were interred on Saturday last with great funeral solemnity in the family vault in the parish church of Workington, attended by the greatest concourse of people ever seen there. The pall was supported by the following gentlemen, viz. Humphrey SENHOUSE, Esq. Anthony BENN, Esq. John DIXON, Esq. Robert WATTERS, Esq. John SPEDDING, Esq. John SENHOUSE, Esq. Thomas HARTLEY, Esq. James CRAIK, Esq. Mr. Peter GALE, and Mr. John PONSONBY.—The bells were rung muzzled, and the pulpit and reading desk, together with the pillars of the Church, hung with black and escutcheons.—The bulk of his large fortune is left to an only daughter.
