Hi Sue,
I’m pleased you found your ancestors mentioned. Thanks for letting me know! This sort of feedback makes it all worthwhile.
At that time, reporting of births, marriages and deaths in the newspapers was not charged for. Most of the information was collected by the newspaper (no doubt with help from the parish clerks and some correspondents from the major towns in Cumberland), some were reported to the newspaper by relatives or, in the case of marriages, by the couple themselves. The BMD column was considered as part of the news. Whether your marriage made it into the paper depended to a large degree on where you lived and whether the newspaper had a good relationship with the parish clerk of that parish. The parish clerks of St. Mary’s and St. Cuthbert’s clearly sent in a weekly list. I remember that at the beginning of one new year, the editor made a very irritated comment that the parish clerk at one of the Carlisle churches was now refusing to cooperate, and stated that this would be a disservice to the readers of the newspaper.

I think it was St. Mary’s, but I can’t really remember. It seems the situation was resolved within a few weeks.
