Rev Mr Martin = Rev Thomas Martin Schoolmaster and Assistant Curate at Threlkeld born in Matterdale, my first cousin five times removed. Rigghead was a farm in Threlkeld Parish by the Common. William Edmondson might have been son or father of the rector (I am between computers and RootsMagic is yet to be transferred! So don't have the details) Stuart

Why would the son or father of the rector have a different surname to him?

Maybe the mother had been married before, and the son kept the name of his real father when his mother remarried?

Sorry. I was not as clear as could be!
Thomas Martin was assistant curate not rector.
There was an Edmundson who was rector about that time.
Just checked on Google  - Thomas Edmundson was rector at Threlkeld 1750 to 1797.
So William might be his son.
