MARRIED

 

Last week at Kirkoswald, by the Rev. Mr. FISHER, the Rev. Mr. LANCASTER of Sunderland in the County of Durham, to Miss BURNEY, with a genteel fortune.

[According to FamilySearch, Thomas LANCASTER & Anne BURNEY married on 10 Sep 1778 at Kirkoswald. According to the Parish Register Transcript, they were both single.]

 

This day at Cockermouth, Mr. WINDER, grocer, to Miss Sally JONES, both of that place.

[According to the marriage bond dated 10 Oct 1778, they were William WINDER, Grocer, aged 29, and Sarah JONES, Spinster, aged 24, both of Cockermouth. According to the Copeland Registers Index, they married on 27 Oct 1778.]

 

Lately at Great Broughton, Mr. PALMER, to Miss WHITTAKER both of the same place.

[According to FamilySearch, John PALMER, aged 23, and Mally WHITTAKER, aged 16, married on 08 Oct 1778 at Bridekirk, Cumberland.]

 

DIED

 

On the 24th of last month at Bath, The Right Hon. the Countess Dowager of Lauderdale.

[According to Wikipedia, she was Lady Elizabeth née OGILVY, born 1692, daughter of James OGILVY, 4th Earl of Findlater, and Anne DUNBAR; she was the widow of Charles MAITLAND, 6th Earl of Lauderdale (c. 1688-1744).]

 

Last Friday at Bramery near Penrith, Mr. John RAILTON, in the 80th year of his age.

[According to FamilySearch, he was buried on 04 Oct 1778 at Edenhall.]

 

Sunday last, at Cockermouth, after a long illness, Mrs. YOUNGHUSBAND, wife of Mr. YOUNGHUSBAND, formerly of the George Inn there.

 

Lately at Cockermouth, Mr. George BEEBY, an eminent leather-dealer, and greatly regretted by all his acquaintances.

[According to the Copeland Registers Index, George BEEBY was buried on 28 Sep 1778 at Cockermouth.]

 

Wednesday last, at Ainsom, in Cartmell, Mr. Thomas BORWICK.

[According to Lancashire OPC, Thomas BARWICK of Aynsom, Yeoman, was buried on 10 Oct 1778 at the Priory Church of St. Mary and St. Michael, Cartmel.]

 

Thursday last, Mrs. DALE, wife of Mr. Henry DALE, of Sandwith, near this place.

[According to the Copeland Registers Index, Mary DALE, wife of Henry, of Sandwath, aged 35, was buried on 07 Oct 1778 at St. Bees.]

Hi Petra

a very interesting latest edition for you!

I have Burneys in my family from Brampton/Lanercost/Hayon area but also as far south as Durdar.

This first entry is really interesting especially the part about a genteel fortune!! All of mine were poor labourers! Gives me another area to now look at for links.

I hope you find a link, Sue. Although Kirkoswald is further south then the usual stomping grounds of your BURNIEs.

Yes it is. I think I will aim to have a look at the original PR and see if I can find any further info! They do tend to pop up in a place and then locate further away. So you never know, but this entry is something I can at least now follow up.
