Saturday 11 Jun 1825   (p. 3, col. 2-3 + 6)     [continued]

On Sunday last, the new chapel at Dalston, belonging to the Wesleyan Methodists, was opened by the Rev. Mr. BRIDGEMAN, who, with the assistance of the Rev. Mr. M'ALLUM, performed divine service three times during the day. The congregation became so numerous that one of the local preachers addressed a considerable portion of them in the open air. After each service, a collection was made, which amounted, in the aggregate, to the liberal sum of £16 7s.

As a boy about 10 years of age, named EILBECK, was riding a blood horse, the property of William BRAGG, Esq. to a field, on Saturday afternoon, the animal took fright, and after galloping nearly a mile, it came up with some carts just as they were entering the narrow bridge across the river Ehen, at Briscoemill, near Egremont, and the boy being unable to curb the fiery steed, it leaped over the bridge into the river, (which fortunately was much swollen with the late rains,) and sustained no farther harm than a slight graze upon one side—the boy disentangled himself from the horse the moment he came in contact with the water, and laying hold of the branch of a tree, was soon rescued from his perilous situation by the person in charge of the carts.

A bill enabling the Marquis of Queensberry to dispose of certain portions of his estates, has received the sanction of Parliament.

The thirty-third anniversary of the Honourable Society was held at Workington on Saturday last, the members (184 in number) walked in procession to the parish church, where an appropriate and very energetic discourse was delivered by the Rev. A. DALZELL. After the service, the Society returned to the Assembly-room where a substantial dinner was prepared, and the remainder of the day was spent in the most joyous manner. Part of the band belonging to the Royal Cumberland Militia attended.

On Wednesday, the 18th ult., about 8 o'clock, A. M. the hounds belonging to James MACHELL, Esq. of Newby Bridge, Lancashire, took the drag of a Foulmart, in Yew Barrow, from whence they proceeded through Graythwaite, Dale Park, Sawrey, the Wrag, Blenheim Tarn, and Pool Scar; after swimming the Skelwith Bridge Pool, on to Langdale, taking rough ground by Tod Crag, Loughrigg, and Gilbert Scar, then crossed the river Rothay, the head of the lake of Windermere, for the Dove Nest Woods, making a turn by Stencher Gill, through Mr. DAWS's out pastures, and the Low Grove Plantations; at which place the foulmart was seen much distressed, making its way to Wake How and White Crag, beating the dogs only a few minutes: at length it was viewed to earth about two o'clock P. M., in Buxton Barren, on Kirkstone in Westmorland, where it fell a prey to its staunch pursuers. This unparalleled run, which lasted six hours, is supposed to have been upwards of thirty miles; and although the field was attended by many "full bred sportsmen," Mr. MACHELL, and Mr. T. SANDYS, were the only two persons in at the death.

The Rev. Abraham Charles MUMMERY, who has been transferred to Morpeth gaol for trial, for robbing the house of Mr. HILL, at Shields, is not properly a clergyman, having obtained his ordination of the Archbishop of York by forged testimonials; but when his Grace discovered the imposture, he stated the same in circulars to the various dioceses, as a caution.

Charles OGLE, Esq. who for a great number of years discharged the office of Collector of the Customs at Newcastle, has been placed on the superannuation list. Sir Cuthbert SHARP, the collector of the Customs at Sunderland, is officiating there as Collector pro tem.

On Saturday last, a number of country people found themselves in the possession of base silver, which they had taken in the butter-market, in Keswick. Some suspicious persons having been seen there, pursuit was made, when Mr. LADYMAN, the constable, succeeded in apprehending a woman, who was taken before the Rev. J. LYNN. She said her name was MILLS, and that she had no base coin upon her. The Rev. Gentleman ordered her to be detained for further inquiry; and she was again brought up on Monday, when it appeared, by the evidence of a respectable country woman, that the prisoner, on the Saturday preceding, bought butter of her in Keswick market, for which she paid five or six base shillings, which were produced. The prisoner was therefore committed. It is supposed she is one of a numerous gang, as more were in the market, but soon decamped.

Appleby or Brampton new fair has of late years been much upon the increase; but the fair of the present year was unprecedented. Considerable business was done even on the Monday amongst the sheep dealers. On Tuesday, the show of sheep and cattle was very numerous; of the former many thousands were disposed of, and more business was done than in any former year on the principal day. On Wednesday, cattle, horses, and sheep met with an unequalled demand—prices good in all, and the number double to any former year. On Thursday several hundreds of Irish cattle arrived—they came in proper time, and were all advantageously sold. Some hundreds of other cattle were also sold on that day. Sheep were bought at Stagshaw Bank and sold here at 3s. per head profit. In all succeeding years there is no doubt but this fair will be maintained three, if not four days.

We must get rid of AI on Google! I put in drag of foulmart and Google asked me if I meant drag of WalMart.
