Anybody know of families called Cooper or Powers in the Broughton,
Whitehaven or Seaton areas? My father (b 1898) was Thomas Powers who
came from Broughton/Whitehaven. His elder sister Sarah (Sally) Cooper
(b1895/6?) nee Powers (who married John Cooper and who ran a removals
business based in or near that village)lived in Lowca Lane, Seaton John
and Sally had one son Ian, ex Navy, and later also in the business) and
my father's younger brother (b 1900+?) John had a house in Whitehaven
and a daughter Dorothy. Ian must be 75+ now and Dorothy 70+ I would
think.

Hi Patrick, I think I found them in 1901, but no John, and a stepson James,
another sister Mary!
They were from Workington. Is this the right family?

Wow. Yes I think these might well be the family in question.
Certainly there my father always said there was a Rotherham connection
too. I also think that it may well be Workington and not Whitehaven -
that could well be the case (I have the abbreviation W'n on a photo
here and may well have made a mistaken guess!). Also my father did have
a half brother so that fits well. So, only John is not there. Maybe he
was younger than I thought and born after 1901? Interesting about a
Mary though....
Thanks v much for that information. Most helpful...

>>my father always said there was a Rotherham connection<<

His mother was the connection, Sarah born in Rotherham in 1866.

I searched all Sarahs born in Rotherham, Yorkshire in 1866, came up with these:

Do any of these names ring a bell?
We can search marriages next, but her first husband was Palmer.

>Do any of these names ring a bell?

None of the surnames rings a bell except Palmer. That I do seem to
remember as being the surname of the half brother of my father. My
father (b1898 Sept 10) had a middle name which he detested (it was
Isaac) though I only discovered this after his death - amazing! -
however it might have some relevance. Also - and this is my reason for
trying to find out more - my mother was always sure that there was some
illegitimacy or some such in the family because my father's sister
Sarah (Sally) Cooper (nee Powers) who lived in Seaton till the early
70s once started to talk of the family and then stopped and would say
no more! My father never talked of anyone but his mother and immediate
family even to my mother so I can only conclude that, as so often in
those days there was something to hide..! As a result we know
virtually nothing about my father's family. It would be nice to unearth
the truth. Hmmm, all these lodgers you found might be more than that!!
<g>
My father's family - maybe the mother's side? - had connexions in Yorks
(possibly Rotherham) and I can now confirm it was Workington where the
other brother John lived.

Thanks for all this. Most interesting
Patrick

Isaac McGlasson was your grandfather's stepfather, so he may have chosen the name for his son.

Uhhmmm well there does seem to be a woodpile down in the 1861 census,
where it looks like Thomas is Elinor's son, and has her maiden name.

Yup, you may be related to William F Buckley, that's a scandal.

So Thomas met Sarah on a visit to his grandma's maybe?

Now we have to find out which one she was.....

You are quite welcome. I suggest you find your grandfather's BMD certificates, his parents hold the key to the scandal.
