SEIZURE OF ADULTERATED MEAL. - On Saturday the 22d instant, the
Meal Lookers for the Burgh of Kendal, received information that thirty-eight
loads of Adulterated Meal were offered for sale in Widow Welch and Sons'
warehouse. On information being given to the Mayor, he granted his warrant
to have it seized for examination. The final decision respecting it was
postponed till Thursday the 27th to give the persons it belonged to an
opportunity of seeing it examined. Samples were taken from each sack in the
presence of the owners and magistrates. The meal was condemned as ' Bad
and adulterated.'
WM. NICHOLSON, of Thrimby, and JAMES JACKSON, of Great Strickland,
whose property the meal was, were each fined 2 l ; and the meal was
ordered to be sold by public auction, in the market, on Saturday the 5th
February, for the purpose of feeding cattle or pigs.
The Mayor acted with the greatest lenity, and promised to return
whatever sum might remain after all expences were paid.
We cannot but look upon this nefarious practice as an offence of no
common magnitude, as its effects fall upon thousands of indigent individuals who
have not the means of detecting the fraud, and whose staff of life is thus
weakened by the wickedness and avarice of unprincipled dealers.
If conscientious motives are not efficient preventatives to this
species of imposition, it is to be hoped that the vigilance displayed by the
magistrates and meal-lookers, on this occasion, will deter others from making a
similar attempt.
