Piper's
Soup Kitchen, Whitehaven
Piper's Soup Kitchen, Whitehaven. The Ladies'
Committee of Piper's Soup Kitchen have little new to offer in the report of last
season's receipts and expenditure. Working men were badly off at the beginning
and throughout the last winter; and now trade seems more depressed than ever.
The generous contributions sent in (for which the Committee return sincere
thanks) enable them to dispense every Wednesday and every Saturday, 396 quarts
of soup, for 23 weeks. In addition to money, they feel much obliged to A B
STEWARD, Esq., of Newton Manor, for 10 hares. The Trustees also would express
their gratitude for a legacy of £50 (less duty, £5 - name withheld.) In
consequence of this kind boon, they have made alterations in the Soup House in
Mill-street, which were essentially necessary, and much required. The present
season commences on November 5th.

A Hard Case
William LIVINGSTONE 32, labourer, Oakbank Cottage, was charged with using snares for the
purpose of taking and killing game on October 30th. William BELL, a game
watcher, found a number of snares on Oakbank Farm,
and from a place of concealment saw them visited by the defendant. One of
the snares contained a rabbit. The defendant pleaded guilty and said he
was hard up. His wife for some time had been so ill that she required
constant attention. He was unable to get a woman to wait on her and had to
remain at home himself. He had work to go to if he only had a
chance. A fine of 10s. and costs was ordered to be paid (£1 2s 6d).
Defendant said he had no money, and if he was at work would make only 3s a
day. The magistrates allowed a month for the payment of the
fine.
