On Monday last, WILLIAM GRAHAM, sen., a tailor in Appleby, was detected in the act of carrying off some silver spoons and glasses from the Crown and Mitre Inn, in that town.  He was immediately committed to the care of a constable, who accompanied him to his own house, where, having obtained permission to go above stairs for some trifling purpose, he effected his escape through a window, and has not since been heard of.

On Thursday night the counting-house in the coal-yard of EARL BALCARRES, on the banks of the canal basin, was entered by a thief, who obtained booty to the amount of about one pound, in copper.  He was afterwards detected and confessed his guilt.

HORRIBLE OCCURRENCE. - A most melancholy proof of the violence of human passions, when not under the guidance of reason and religion, took place on Thursday last, at Crawligh, near Turby.  Two young men, named GRIFFITHS and ROBERTS, had for a considerable time past paid their addresses to a young woman in that neighbourhood.  She encouraged the attentions of one of them (GRIFFITHS), to whom she was married about two months since.

ROBERTS, smarting with disappointment, and urged on by despair, determined on revenge upon his fortunate rival.

On Thursday morning last, under pretence of going to skate, he persuaded GRIFFITHS to accompany him to a piece of ice that had been formed in the declivity of the rocks, of which there are many in the neighbourhood.  Crossing one of the rocks, he suddenly took from his pocket a bottle, under pretence of taking some spirits to keep out a cold, and with it immediately knocked his companion down, and afterwards attempted to cut his throat, and in so doing, lacerated the mouth and face of the unfortunate man in a dreadful manner.

Finding it impossible to effect his biaboheal purpose, from the resistance made, he had resource to main strength, and threw the unfortunate victim of his malice down the side of the rock, being a perpendicular height of nearly forty feet;  by this he was much bruised and cut, but not killed (as might be supposed) by the fall.

In the course of the day, he was discovered by some gentlemen, who happened to be passing on a shooting excursion.  Every assistance humanity could suggest was afforded, and medical aid being immediately procured, some hopes are entertained of recovery.  The poor fellow at first refused to tell the name of his brutal assailant, but it having been afterwards made known, a warrant was issued for his apprehension.
