Hi all,

David shared this with me today and with his permission I am passing it along. He said Liz may remember it.

The Original Workington Grammar School Song
(by HD Rawnsley)

Where Cuthbert's body sought the sea
And Scottish Mary sought the land,
As glad as Derwent flowing free
We boys and girls are hand in hand,*
All vowed to seek from early youth
The Sea of Knowledge, Land of Truth.

We are but young, but we shall grow
To be the helpers of our time,
If adding to whate'er we know
We feel that knowing less is crime,*
And strive with heart and soul awake
To work for Cumberland's dear sake.

There, free from slag, by flame refined,
The red-hot streams of metal pour,
Here, warmed with zeal, afire of mind
We smelt for use eternal ore-
The gold of purpose sought and won
In this fair School of Workington.**

Flow Derwent flow, rise Solway rise,
Ye but obey a higher rule,
And we who would be true and wise
Obedient to the law of school*
Must learn on earth, in Heaven above,
That wisdom's noblest law is love.

Just to add, the words were written by a venerable Keswick clergyman,
Canon HD Rawnsley, who founded the National Trust in England, that
still cares for vast tracts of the Lake District etc.

Can still vividly remember Loopy Leatham bashing out the tune on the
school hall grand piano and the words (as if one neededed to look! )
pasted onto the covers of the little school hymnbooks.

Some might think it slushy and outmoded, but think the sincerity and
totally appropriate imagery still shines through, even now.....

Grateful acknowledgments to Andy Byers for featuring this in his
interesting blog

Liz remembers Newlands School song - I was one of the plebs who went to Newlands - great school.  Loads of friends (and boyfriends) went to Grammar school though!

Roland, who went to Guard Street School, can't remember if us out of town plebs had a school song. I suppose  we must have, probably to do with unicorns.

Sue, my wife, who was Head Girl at the Grammar School (same year as Malcolm McCoss was Head Boy) cannot remember the School Song !!!!
