AMERICAN PAPERS.
American Papers to the 25th ult. have
reached us this morning. The proceedings in Congress are brought down to
the 21st December, but there is nothing in them which would be of much interest
to our readers, if we except the following: -
The House of Representatives, in the
sitting of the 15th ult. unanimously agreed to a resolution proposed by MR.
TAYLOR, of New York, "that a Committee be appointed to inquire into the
expediency of prohibiting by law the introduction of Slaves into the territories
of the United States, west of the Mississipi."

"THE COLUMBUS - We have received a
communication stating that the cause of the scarcity of seamen is occasioned by
opening so many places of rendezvous, to enroll men for the Columbus, 74, now,
says our informant, about to double Cape Horn. In this case LORD COCHRANE
will have a fine opportunity of seeing one of the finest ships that ever
floated. COMMODORE BAINBRIDGE has published an order, under the date of
the 17th inst., for all officers attached to the Columbus, 74, to join her
without delay.
The
Charleston Courier states, that orders had reached that post, directing the
military force to be removed to Amelia Island. A dash at the Floridas is
conjectured."
