CUMBERLAND SESSIONS.

The Michaelmas Quarter Sessions of the Peace for the county of Cumberland was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, in the Crown Court, Carlisle.  W. N. OLIPHANT-FERGUSON, Broadfield;  J. JAMESON, Esq., Moorhouses;  &c., &c.

The Grand Jury having been sworn, the Chairman delivered his Charge, after which the Court proceeded with the trials.

PLEADED GUILTY.

JANE KESWICK (22) servant, pleaded guilty to stealing a piece of black rep and other articles, the property of JOSEPH DUGGAN, at Whitehaven, on the 28th of July last.  Sentenced to three  months’ imprisonment with hard labour.

JAMES CLARK (36), dyer, pleaded guilty to housebreaking at Irthington, on the 3rd Sept. last.  Sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment with hard labour.

MARY ANN SIMPSON pleaded guilty to exposing her male child, under two years of age, and thus endangering its life, at Penrith, on the 28th July last.  Previous to the sentence being passed, MR. DAWSON said he wished to say a word of two with regard to MARY ANN SIMPSON’s case.  It appeared that before she left the child where she did, she had applied at one or two places to have her child put out to nurse; and even after placing the child on the ground, she had waited to see the woman (MRS. HAIR) take it away before she made off.  Sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour.

GEORGE HUNTER pleaded guilty to stealing divers articles at Workington, in September last.  Sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment with hard labour.

JAMES WILSON (32), boilermaker, pleaded guilty to housebreaking at Stanwix, and stealing two cloth coats and other articles, the property of MR. M. DAVEY, on the 1st August last.  Sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labour.

JAMES LOWTHER (17) and JAMES MORRISON (16), pleaded guilty to stealing two shirts and one cap, the property of WILLIAM McVITTIE, at Whitehaven, on the 26th September last.  MORRISON pleaded guilty to two previous convictions. – MR. DICKINSON addressed the Bench for LOWTHER, in mitigation of sentence, urging that he had never been convicted before, and that he had been corrupted in this matter by MORRISON.  He called the prosecutor, MR. McVITTIE, who spoke to LOWTHER’s previous good character. – MORRISON was sentenced to seven years’ penal servitude, and two years’ police surveillance;  LOWTHER to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour.

JAMES LYON (24) labourer, pleaded guilty to stealing 5s. 2-1/2d., the property of JOSEPH FREARS, at Whitehaven, on the 5th August last. Sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labour, and twelve months’ police surveillance.
