Good morning!

How many of you remember dear Lucy SANDS?

The murder and trial involving Lucy SANDS and Maynard HARRISON were by far the most interesting articles I had ever transcribed. I wonder how many of you remember the story. I just received the e-mail below about HARRISON and wonder if anyone can help this gentleman. I told him I would ask all of you because some of you are pretty darn good at digging up clues.

Please let me know if anyone can uncover anything at all. I would love to know and to pass it on to this gentleman.

Hi Anne, I came across your e-mail address on a forum discussing the murder that took place in 1882 in Workington and wondered if you had found out much more information in the end as to what happened with this case. I have read the transcripts and see that Maynard James Harrison was aquitted and from the looks of it he then moved to America where he married and had two children.
The reason I ask is because I have been doing a lot of research on our family tree and there seems to be a lot of mystery surrounding this Maynard Harrison. I am not sure how much research you have done but Maynards father, Richard Colchester Harrison was the brother of Maynard Colchester Harrison who would have been my third great grandfather. Their father, also known as Maynard Colchester Harrison, was a highly regarded person within South Wales and a descendent of Sir Maynard Colchester of Westbury Court, a prominent family from the 1600's. This may well be why the murder drew so much attention at the time, you only have to Google Sir Maynard Colchester and you will see there is plenty of history surrounding them.

Any extra information you gathered would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Paul Colchester Harrison<<<<

I remember the story well (and very shocking it was too!) but I don't know any further details than those we dug up at the time.

I think all the transcriptions are linked to on the Cumberland Newspapers website.

well, if you are still in touch with Paul, please tell him that Maynard was the killer - unfortunately he has a murderer in his family, the proof came 10 years later when a Joseph Telford (local Miscreant who was associated with Maynard) at the age of 34 was lying on his deathbed and he made a final confession to a priest who was administering his last rites, that he helped Maynard hide the body, and named Maynard as the killer.
This backs up the fact that Maynard couldn't help talking about an unknown girl and her assailants to people whom he met on the Northside, with some strangely correct facts that two men had done mischief to a young woman, they had stolen her shoes and hat, and when disturbed, one had run off in one direction, one the other, Maynard knew too much about what actually happened, and couldn't stop himself from letting out details of what happened that night to total strangers.

Maynard also tried to join the army one week after Lucy had gone missing, but was turned down because he was weak of stature, his break for freedom didn't work, so he hung around and knew that one day she would be found.

If he has such high family connections, then my theory that freemasons in high places set out to get him off the charge must be correct, I am trying to find out the connections of that family and freemasons in the area, he was banged to rights, but smiled contentedly throughout the trial knowing that he would be a free man after it had ended.

He was soon packed off out of the county and out of the country to make his way elsewhere with a fresh start, and America was where he headed, he seemed to be there for most of his life, returning to the UK periodically by ship. for what reason I don't know?
There are rewports of a Maynard Harrison living in Tottenham in 1901, with 2 children, Richard and William, but, I am not 100% certain if this is the same Maynard Harrison? when I've checked out other peoples family trees, he seems to have had 4 children, to two different women, one was a Chilean and their son died before he was 1 year old, the other three seemed to live on in the USA.

I'm still researching him, but I doubt he ever returned to the UK for any prolonged period? He knew that a noose awaited him if he was ever tried again, his death and burial place still eludes me, I will find it - eventually, and hopefully find out exactly what he did for the rest of his life, I do hope tat his dreams were nightmares, haunted by the deeds he had done!

For anyone who was following the story of the murder of Lucy Sands, I have some incredibly exciting news.

Lucy came to me in a dream in 2011 when I was living in New Zealand. OK I know, you're thinking nutter alert? but read on.

Intrigued by its intensity and the three calls for help (there was no person other than a figure of a male standing over a crumpled mass of what looked like clothing in a moonlit vista) from the girl followed by a high pitched scream which woke me from the dream, I couldn't get it out of my head, so I followed what I had been shown and started to trace an old family and their mansion that i used to play in as a kid. I was working on the wrong research, but within that researching I came across a court case that one of the family had sat in on from carlisle. Intrigued I read further and found that the story had similarities, a few years ago after I had moved back to the UK I decided to visit the scene were Lucy had been murdered, I found nothing on the spot, 135 years of history had removed every trace of her from the spot, I turned to leave and walk back to the town and looked up? The vista which greeted me was the same one that had been indelibly etched into my mind from the dream, everything was in the same place, the caste on the hill, the hillsides, the road, the river, the bridges, I looked down at my feet and at them lay a clump of white feathers, the grass was wet all around but the feathers were perfectly dry. at this point a shover ran down my spine and I knew I had fund the source of the dream...
The odd thing is the original research I started was of a family loosely associated with the trial, had I not researched the family I would probably never have found Lucy?

Anyway, I've spent the passt 5.5 years researching her murder, the case, the intricate background to it and was going to write a book, but, I have gone one massive leap forwards from this idea and am now 45% of the way through self financing a feature film about Lucy, her friends, her family and the people that this entire murder case engulfed in its wake!
The cast of actors is currently 51 members strong and the crew total 11 professionals which isn't including myself.

Apart from the dream, I have experienced many 'odd' things occurring during the past few years, some of the cast experienced some strange meetings with a young lady back in December, who when spoken to just smiled back at them and when they looked away, she simply disappeared from the place she'd beeb standing in for the past coupe of hours, this was in two separate locations on consecutive nights Xmas eve and Xmas day,  4 days after a massive shoot had been performed but these two actors.

We have 3 more shoots to do and the second block of the film will be complete and ready to edit, I then take the short version of the film on the road on the 2nd June to premiere in Workington and will then take the film on the road to various venues in a bid to secure more funding to complete the filming of this feature film.

The film will take some massive twists and turns - the story is far from being straightforwards in its complexity - there are connections that need to be brought into play and justice finally needs to be served after 137 years. Was we've all had online in the court transcripts is simply the tip of the iceberg,

If anyone is interested in following this you can find the films page on facebook, https://www.facebook.com/balladoflucysands/
If anyone is in the UK and wants to see the screening of the short whilst its on tour, please feel free to visit the page and send me a message :)

How very exciting, Steph.  I’d like to see more, but I am not on FaceBook;

Any way you could send the photos to the genealogy-...@googlegroups.com     ?

We’d love to see them !  And,  p.s.  I have e-mailed your message to Ann, who was the

one who gathered all the information at that time, and published her story on Jim Patterson’s
