Very true. I don't have ancestry.uk. It would be interesting to hear how people found the readability of the census.....especially since it was written in pencil.

It's really bad in some areas. I transcribed for FreeCen and some areas just drove me nuts. You want to be as acurate as you can, but sometimes...I'll have to go check out the Queen's census...
I own a copy of the 1841 Cumberland census, and my areas of interest are Houghton and Ainstable. On my census CDs there are many pages missing or blank in these 2 particular parishes that I am researching. Needless to say I have been waiting for the 1841 census to come online at the ancestry site, hoping that the missing pages would be miraculously there at the ancestry site, because of their special scanning capabilities.
Alas, the same pages are missing from ancestry.
Overall, the pages at ancestry are clearer and easier to read than the pages on my CDs.
Also, at the ancestry site, under "Known problems with the 1841
Census", I don't see that they have stated which parishes in Cumberland
are incomplete.
Thanks for sending the info Darlene. I was just curious when the BBC article said they had to use special filming of some pages.Barb, Ontario, Canada.
