MARRIED

Yesterday se'ennight at Calverley, Mr. DOBSON, an eminent attorney at Pudsey near Leeds, (a gentleman of great fortune) to Miss MOORE, niece of Capt. BINSLEY in New Lowther-street.

[According to the Parish Register, Joseph DOBSON, Gentleman, and Margaret MOORE, Spinster, both of this Parish, married on 11 Oct 1779 at St. Wilfrid, Calverley, Yorkshire.]

DIED

Last week at Cockermouth in the Eighty-sixth year of his age, much respected by a numerous acquaintance, Mr. Joseph DIXON, many years master of the Globe Inn, in that place: Simplicity of manners, integrity of heart, and hospitality of disposition, were the discriminating features of his character:

"In placid virtue's peaceful paths he trod,

"Just to mankind, and duteous to his God.

"Plain were his manners and without disguise,

"The great not flatter'd, nor the mean despis'd."

Virtue is undoubtedly the first object of praise whether found in the palace, the villa, or the cottage. Nothing is more frequent than encomiums on the dead, but the partiality of friends has rendered encomiums generally neglected; they are now considered as little more than matters of mere compliment; justice to the memory of the deceased obliges the writer of this to say, that the portrait here given, falls greatly short of the wor- [sic] the original.

[According to the Copeland Registers Index, Mr. Joseph DIXON, widower, was buried on 15 Oct 1779 at Cockermouth.]

Friday last in Quay-street, after a short illness, Capt. Benjamin JAMES; his arrival here was mentioned in our last, in a vessel given him by the Black Prince, after he had burnt his own.

[According to the Copeland Registers Index, Benjamin JAMES, sailor, age 37, was buried on 15 Oct 1779 at Holy Trinity, Whitehaven.]

At Carlisle, on Sunday se'ennight, very suddenly after returning from church, Mr. William KIRKBRIDE, an Alderman of that corporation, and one of the gunners of the castle.

[According to FamilySearch, he was aged 71 and buried on 13 Oct 1778 at St. Mary, Carlisle.]

Last week, at Carlisle, one of the common council men of that corporation.

[The Newcastle Chronicle of 16 Oct 1779 reports the death of Mr. Geo. HOPE, a common councilman, on Saturday 09 Oct 1779 at Carlisle.]

Thursday se'ennight at Mump's Hall, near Guilsland Spaw, Mrs. Bridget TEASDALE, in the 62d year of her age, many years mistress of that inn.

[According to FamilySearch, she was aged 59 and buried on 09 Oct 1779 at Lanercost.]

Sunday last at Workington, Mr. John HUDSON, many years an eminent shop-keeper in that place.

[According to the Copeland Registers Index, he was buried on 19 Oct 1779 at St. Michael, Workington.]
