The sports at Whitehaven, on Tuesday, were numerously attended—probably 15,000 persons were present. The chief prize was won by John M'LOUGHLIN, commonly called CLATTEN, a noted wrestler, residing at Whitehaven. WATSON of Torpenhow was present, and a great number of professors of the Art.

The Senatus Academicus of the University of Edinburgh have conferred, during the last Session, the degree of LL. D. on the following noblemen and gentlemen, viz.:—The Most Noble the Marquis of Hastings, the Right Hon. the Earl of Dalhousie, the Right Hon. Robert PEEL, Sir Thomas BRISBANE, K. C. B., Sir Thomas Stamford RAFFLES. On Tuesday, the Senatus Academicus conferred the degree of Doctor in Medicine on a great number of Gentlemen from various parts of the United Kingdom and the Colonies, among whom we observe the names of two of our young fellow-citizens: namely, Mr. Railton ATKINSON, whose inaugural dissertation was De Podagra; Mr. Rowland Morris FAWCETT, inaug. dis. De Punctura quæ Dissectione occurrit.—The number of persons who this year received diplomas is greater by 19 than that of any former year.

On Monday week, Mr. Walter DODS, farmer, Puddyburn, parish of Semonburn, Cumberland, was found drowned in a pool where he had gone to bathe, and was amissing only a quarter of an hour. So says an Edinburgh paper: but we rather think the parish should be Simonburn, and the county, Northumberland.

From a Correspondent: At the new dispensary, situate on the verge of St. Cuthbert's Churchyard, the smell of decayed animal matter (from the contiguous graves) is so strong in the waiting-room as to render a stoppage there of only a few minutes extremely disagreeable at this time of the year.—Why do the inhabitants of Carlisle relax in their efforts to obtain additional means of sepulture?

The following is a remarkable instance of the fecundity of Bees, when judiciously managed:—A respectable breeder of these valuable insects (observing the desirable situation of the place) came to the farm-house of High Armaside, in Lorton, and liberally offered to bring Mrs. W. a hive of bees on trial, and the profits should be equally divided. It was accordingly put up last spring, under his own management, and wonderful to tell, five distinct casts had been taken from the old and new hives before the end of July!

Mr. BRAITHWAITE, of Hall-Flat, near Santon Bridge, sold a bushel of new barley in Egremont market on Saturday for seventeen shillings.

Mr. FORREST, surgeon, is the Mayor-elect for Kendal for the ensuing year.

There appears little probability of the seamen and ship-owners of Sunderland soon having their dispute settled. The chief, if not the only cause of their remaining hostility, is the claim the sailors make of payment for casting ballast, which their employers will not comply with.

Mr. DODD, surveyor, has recently arrived at Durham from London, delegated by several enterprising gentlemen of the latter place, who are possessed of extensive capital, to make proposals to the gentlemen of the county of Durham for cutting a canal from the above city to the port of Sunderland, for the purpose of conveying coals and other articles.
